Have You Seen Samo?

Samo is ridiculous
Samo is ridiculous, originally uploaded by christheobscure.

A neighbor writes in to see if anyone has seen Samo recently:

My wife and I are among the people that look forward to visiting Samo the cat, usually in the middle of the block on Marlborough Road, between Cortelyou & Dorchester. For the past few days we have not seen him around (he almost always runs out from behind the houses to greet us). We are very concerned because the last time we saw him, this past Monday, he looked like he had been in a fight, with some small patches of fur missing and possibly a cut on his leg. He’s also been looking thinner and thinner, obviously very hungry when we gave him some food.

Oh god, I’ve been wondering the same thing. I started feeding Samo a week and a half ago because he’d been looking so thin. Each day, he’d come running when I called him but now we haven’t seen him in quite a few days. I’m starting to get really worried. If anyone sees him, PLEASE post a comment.

ADOPT HIM or contact mayorsalliance.org to get him adopted.

Hey everyone. As one of Samo’s roommates, I can say that everyone in our house on Marlborough is super touched that the community loves this cat as much as we do.

Indeed, Samo has been getting thin and is having some fur issues. He made a trip to the vet this week to check up on his condition, and the doctor recommended some medication and a little quality time indoors. Samo is taking the medicine in stride but isn’t thrilled about spending the next week or so inside. Nothing diagnosed for certain, but we’re hoping it’s a bug of some sort, and that he’ll make a solid turnaround in the near term.

We’ll keep you all posted. He certainly loves the community, and again, thanks so much for asking.

Jeremy, you just made my day! Here’s to Samo getting better quickly so that we can all love him up again!!

Cheers, Samo! We miss you and we’re glad you’ve got so many adoring humans to care for you.

Aw, this cat is great! I’m glad to know he’s got a name and a family and is on the road to recovery. Hi Samo!

I’m glad Samo is being cared for and on the mend, but please keep him indoors 100% of the time. Contrary to popular belief, cats are more stressed and die much sooner when outdoors. And, they usually die in gruesome ways (predators, struck by cars, or worse…).

If you can’t adopt him, find him a home where he will be an indoor cat. It’s the humane thing to do.

Glad to hear Samo’s doing well.  Thanks for letting us know Jeremy.  I’d be happy to talk to you about the adoption process, Jeremy!

Good for you for having a heart and helping the little fellow.

Samo is incredibly sweet and we are thrilled that he is being taken care of. Thanks for the updates and for just just chiming in with you feelings about our friend. After not seeing him for a few days, day or night, my wife was getting pretty freaked out. I too would love to see him with a permanent, safe home. If anyone is considering adopting, I’m not sure you’ll find a more loving, affectionate kitty than this guy!

    Hello Everyone,

Thank you very much for your inquiries and concerns regarding Sammo’s abrupt disappearance.  As the other of Sammo’s flatemates, I can confirm Jeremy’s statement that everyone in our house is incredibly touched at the out pouring of concern for Sammo’s health.  We love Sammo’s connection to the neighborhood.

And a word regarding finding Sammo a home: Sammo has been living in our house for over ten years.  Sammo came to the house as a stray in 2001 and we adopted him immediately.  We have been taking him to the vet every year since then: feeding him, looking after him, nursing him when he’s gotten sick – a surprisingly rare occurrence.  Several attempts have been made to make him an indoor cat – which we discussed extensively with our veterinarian – but Sammo loves being outdoors (as Jeremy mentioned, he’s not thrilled being forced to stay indoors).  While there are risks, we feel as though part of his charm and health comes from his wandering nature.  As always, we will continue to look after him and do whatever it takes to keep him alive and healthy and loved.

So thank you again for all the good wishes.  Sammo is feeling much better and will be out again to greet you as soon as we get the okay from the vet.

Thank you for the extra info on Sammo. I’m so glad to finally know that he *does* have official caretakers (it was always a mystery..the stuff of urban legend!). And, as unpopular as this will be, like you, I can’t imagine making a cat like Sammo stay indoors. He is clearly thrilled when he sees people coming to see him. I can’t see how taking that joy away from him would benefit his well-being. Anyway, thank you again and three cheers for Sammo!

Yes, it is a dangerous world out there!  Forget cats, what about yourselves!!  Lock your doors, Ditmas Park!  Better to get fat, diabetic, and disinterested than expose yourself to the harsh grit of Marlborough Road and the seedy clientele always coming and going in and out of that (what are they doing in there, anyway?) Flatbush Food Co-Op!

By the way, death itself is gruesome, weather it occurs in one’s sleep or while skydiving.

Wow, good luck with that ‘comedy’ series. (Advice: try adding humor to your sarcasm; it plays better.)

Samo is one amazing cat.  I met him only recently and I’m sure he’s part dog.  He’s so cool and funny and friendly and charming.  If he played an instrument it would be the horn.
