Weekly theme: porches
Artist: Kasia Nikhamina
“Available for hire: porchsitter”
Got a porch, but no time to use it?
Local, apartment-dwelling writer seeks a porch on which to sit, mornings and/or evenings. Quiet, neat, bearing no resemblance to Goldilocks. Will sit in return for coffee (and occasional bathroom use).
Will make your Victorian look homey and do wonders for property values. Will bring out the vibrant hues of its painted trimmings, shutters, gables. Happy to use a notebook instead of a laptop, if faithfulness to the era is a priority.
Will not entertain suitors. Willing to report on the comings and goings of the neighbors.
Promises to give credit to homeowner in acceptance speech, should she snag a Pulitzer one day.
How does living in Ditmas Park feed/inspire/affect your work?
It’s a pleasure to live in a neighborhood that is a respite from overrun Manhattan – that has a greenmarket, a smattering of cafés, a compost garden. All this helps me focus.
What was your approach to this week’s theme – “porches”?
This vignette was inspired by the porchlust that seizes me when I walk among the Victorians, as well as by the ads that people post on DPB, pitching themselves as ideal tenants. I composed it at our very own Café Madeline.
