Help Local Art Student Project, Text Now

Tuesday, December 7th, 2010

Jeff Kirsch emails about a very cool project, a sketch of which is above — and needs your help:

It’s a prototype of a projected installation for a storefront on Cortelyou Road that allows passers-by to text in their ideas for things they’d like to see happen in the neighborhood. Those ideas are immediately visible, and others can vote on them. We’re suggesting that the top three ideas each much might be rolled into an agenda item and briefly discussed at the regular meetings of CB14. The idea here is not that random, texted thoughts about the neighborhood will necessarily do something the community board isn’t doing already, but rather that it serves as a way to raise awareness and engagement with existing community organizations in a heavily-trafficed space. People who submit or vote on ideas would be kept updated on times and locations of board meetings, and invited to attend.

He’s presenting the project tonight at the School for Visual Arts. Here’s where they need help:

We’d ask people to text their answer to the question: “What is your wish for the neighborhood?” to the number (347) 396-1725. They’ll receive an automated response acknowledging their submission, and their input will show up live on our projection.

This is such a great idea — I hope he finds a way to make it happen!

Of course, only the ideas of people who text will be represented.

Thanks for the post, and everyone’s input. The critic went great! Once finals end, we’ll hopefully have a chance to get more of this project public, if there’s an interest.

I should also mention that this was a collaboration with the very talented Kristin Gräfe, whose portfolio is online at http://www.kristingraefe.de .

@Digitality – That’s a fair point, and not something that went unconsidered. Our thinking is that a suitably low but existent barrier to entry would improve the quality of the input. That is, you have to care at least a little to go through the steps.

By making the interface the nearly ubiquitous technology that is SMS messaging, that barrier should is unlikely to be one of access, but instead one of motivation.

This is an awesome idea- another way to feel like we are communicating with our neighbors in this area, and perhaps get something off the ground that is needed for the neighborhood. THANK YOU!

If you want quality input, text messaging is the worst possible choice.

That provides a lot of helpful insight Digitality. I am sure the whole project will benefit from your well thought out input.

I’m sure all your text messages are well-thought out masterpieces of expository writing, William, but we all know that’s not what the vast majority of them are like.

This is a great idea. Jeff should reach out to Flatbush Development Corporation since they are the organization that does most of the “work” in the community – housing, youth, economic development. It’s great to pitch it to CB14, but FDC is where it’s at. http://www.fdconline.org

What a great idea! What a great project! The more a community can have direct input into what it would like to see, the more involved the community. Isn’t that why this blog works so well!! Hope to see it up and running soon.
