Welcome Market, Cortelyou Road’s newest store! This morning I was able to get a chocolate croissant, espresso and a glimpse at all the specialty food they are selling. This includes Anarchy in a Jar jams, a large selection of cheeses, gorgeous breads, olive oil, pickles and lots more.
Here is a sample

We completely agree with the New York Magazine, that Mimi’s Kuba Soup is amazing. It’s a hearty soup, so go hungry. If you’d like to know what it looks like, its the second soup from the left on the second row of images.

Kuba Soup
Mimi’s Hummus
Chef Mimi Kitani’s tangy take on kuba, one of the various soups she grew up eating as the Israeli-born daughter of a Moroccan mother and Iraqi father, features robust beef-stuffed farina dumplings afloat in a vibrant broth that’s light in body but rich in fresh beety flavor ($11; 1209 Cortelyou Rd., nr. Westminster Rd., Ditmas Park; 718-284-4444).

The Times real estate section has a Living in Ditmas Park feature this weekend. It basically gets the big houses, large apartments, thing, and claims folks come for the space and stay for the food. (And yes – we are super lucky to have a good number of really great food places in the neighborhood).
But what we like most about Ditmas Park is the kind of people it attracts. That its a very real community, where you know your neighbors be it a 100 unit apartment building or that leafy block of large houses, and talk to them. Where people care about their food – the CSAs, the fact that the Sunday morning farmers market is so successful its now open year round, and that we seem to also be able to support a food coop and an excellent natural foods store. Where people care about their environment - just look at the many initiatives of Sustainable Flatbush – from community garden, to composting, to recycling awareness (and please, do come plant those daffodils this weekend!).
We came for the space, but we stayed because we like our neighbors, the laid back feel of the place, and the fact that folks like to slow down and enjoy each others’ company. What about you?

Two years ago tonight, I woke to the sound of cracking wood. My wife and I watched a large limb fall into our backyard and a 100 year old tree fall against our neighbors house. I snapped the photos in this set with a point and shoot camera the next morning August 8th, 2007.
