Burglaries

Thursday, April 22nd, 2010

There have been a number of burglaries in the neighborhood over the last week or so, so here are the reminders:

-If you live in an apartment and have fire escape – please remember to LOCK the windows facing the fire escape, and the ones next to the fire escape too. Every year as the weather warms, folks leave their windows open and come back to apartments that someone has ransacked. Do not let people you do not know into your apartment building. Make sure your building has security cameras.

- If you live in a house – make sure the basement has bars in the windows, and they they are secure. Make sure all the ground floor doors and windows are LOCKED not just closed. Make sure you have good lighting, security systems and cameras help too.

Report suspicious activities. If you suspect someone has been in your house – do not enter, call 911. The burglar may still be inside. Even if not, the police can preserve the crime scene better. According to Deputy Inspector Sprague (of the 66th, he spoke a few days back to folks in Kensington), they solved a number of recent burglary cases using DNA left at the scene.

When I was burglarized, a detective visited us to discuss what we can do. He gave us a pamphlet with diagrams showing us how to “peg” our windows. I don’t have the pamphlet anymore….

The idea is to put screws or pegs on the window so they can’t open more than a few inches (like 3″ max I think). Then you can still open your windows a bit, but they are secure. And, the best approach is to make it so you can “disengage” the device so you can open the window completely when you’re home. (like being able to fold it down or disconnect it) He said these were a great idea even just in case you forget to lock your window or whatever.

Oh, yeah, and when I was robbed blind… they came through the window *near* the fire escape (i.e., one of the guys hung off the fire escape, climbed in, and then let his buddies in fire escape window.)

My neighbor’s windows were locked, and the burglars found a way to open them anyway.

I’ve been reading about this spate of burglaries on the Flatbush Family Network Yahoo group — scary stuff.

Sometimes it’s easy to be lulled into a false sense of security. Thanks for the reminder to lock our windows – I’ll be doing that today for sure.

I was just walking from Caton to Cortelyou along Stratford. I saw a Domino pizza guy going up to a house. We looked at each other wierd because I noticed he didn’t have a pizza. I kept walking; he went up the steps to the door and then quickly ran down when hearing a dog on the other side. I started wondering if he even worked at Dominos. Then he called over to a colleague wearing a red Domino shirt who was coming down the steps of a house across the street – anyway, what a peculiar way to deliver flyers. I kept watching them and that’s all they seemed to be doing, but I’m still wondering about that.

Years ago we had a couple, the Inestis, the wife Maria sold Avon and would ring door bells. If no one was home, the husband Robert would kick in the back door. After several months of this, he was arrested, took a plea and spent quite a few years in bucolic upstate New York as a guest of the State. Sadly, Maria left him for another man.
