Joshua Rubin Memorial Service This Sunday

Tuesday, January 3rd, 2012

The neighborhood is invited to a memorial service for Joshua Rubin, the owner of Whisk Bakery Cafe who was found murdered in Pennsylvania, this Sunday, January 8 at 4pm at Temple Beth Emeth.

As the investigation into the homicide continues, there have been reports Josh was in debt, that he got into a car with someone he knew on the day he disappeared, and that he was killed someplace other than the site where his body was found. The investigation remains centered in Lehigh County, PA. His funeral was held in Providence last week.

If you missed it over the holidays, a reminder that his family recommended two organizations where donations can be made in Josh’s memory. More information on how to make a donation can be found here.

ETA: Rabbi Heidi Hoover of Temple Beth Emeth has volunteered to conduct the service, and is available on Wednesday (until about 4pm) and Thursday to talk to and meet with people who want to share their memories and stories. Rabbi Hoover will weave a eulogy together from what she knew of Josh, and what we all tell her. Interested people should email her to set up a time to talk. Please contact her at rabbihoover@gmail.com or at Temple Beth Emeth, 718-282-1596.

These new “facts” that are coming to light in places like the Brooklyn Paper are driving me crazy. I don’t know anyone who has opened a business without going into that sort of debt. The manner of his death is just so cruel and indigestible regardless of the circumstances. His poor family. Absolutely no one should have to endure that sort of loss.

So true. I appreciate the unnamed official in the Times piece who said that motive hasn’t been established, and that “If you knock on every other door in Brooklyn, you are going to find people with $20,000 in credit card debts.” Especially true for anyone who just opened a business. Of course you’re going to have loans. ~Carmen
