Locked in the Laundromat?

Sunday, November 15th, 2009

An early-rising and reliable neighborhood source emails:

The skinny Chinese guy who appears to own the building and laundromat at Cortelyou and East 17th Street was hauled off in handcuffs this morning. We’d been hearing amplified music since 6:30am from a block away. When he emerged from his lair about 7:15, the music was still blasting from the top floor, he was talking to himself, dressed like the construction worker from the Village People and wearing a license plate around his neck, Flavor Flav style, that said “Bad Boy.”

Upon returning from breakfast, the corner was surrounded by police vehicles. He alledgedly locked a handful of customers in the laundromat then locked himself in his office until the police persuaded him to come out. Folks on the street told several hair-raising tales of past erratic, threatening behavior.

Our tipster’s advice: “Find another laundromat for today.”

UPDATE: Another neighbor comments with some more information, and a different tone:

His name is Jack and there’s nothing threatening about him. He is the victim of a head injury (so I’ve been told) and has occasional episodes. We’ve lived on the same block as that place for years. He’s a sweet guy and I hope he’s OK.

This blog is like a gossip column.

    Is that so bad?

I’m not going to disagree with the “I hope he’s OK” sentiment, but if this allegation of locking folks into the laundromat has any truth to it… well, I would categorize that as “threatening” No?

btw, I only used that place once and the woman who was working there was a bit nasty to me… I’ve moved on. So, I guess that was all for the best. Lowered my chances of abduction and imprisonment! :-)

I’ve long since stopped using all the laundromats in Cortelyou and now only use the C.I.A. CityWash.

Yeah, I agree, that is not good. Just saying, he’s generally a harmless person.

This is one of the best apparently true stories I’ve ever read on a blog. Seriously. I love it so much when life is like a Coen Bros. movie only better…

I have washed my clothes a few times there. Jack has always been really nice to me. The past few months he has been acting strangely. Leaving the laundromat open late at night, blasting music and spraying graffiti inside his own laundromat. Whatever the reason he snapped, I hope he gets some help and gets better.

  • Francisco

FYI he is Korean not Chinese.

  • Lenora

You know this is the reason I am happy to not only have my own washer and dryer in my home, but now I also have an idea for my construction outfit and left over plates. Just sayin…

  • Mahesha

Well the next time I plan on blasting my Public Enemy albums and spray painting my apt. @ 6 in the morning I’ll be sure to make sure no one from this blog is within earshot or viewing distance… Jeez, can’t a Korean live?

Oh my god! I can’t believe I found this. I did my clothes at that laundromat twice, I was totally mystified by the guy (who I guess was Jack)’s weird behavior and the fact that the place was covered in graffiti on the inside.
