A New Japanese Restaurant

Thursday, January 14th, 2010

We have not had a chance to independently confirm this, but a trustworthy neighbor emails :

I passed by the space at 1406 Cortelyou Rd. (btwn San Remo and New Neighbor) and noticed there was paper on the windows. I have been admiring this space for several months and wondered why it was vacant for so long. Well, the two men inside where beaming with pride when they told me they would be opening a new Japanese restaurant.

UPDATE – It’s true. A Japanese restaurant is coming to Cortelyou, though it may be a little while before the construction is complete. The owners have another Japanese restaurant in Midtown Manhattan, not sure of exact location.

I think it is great that we will soon have 2 more options (the Bagel Place and a Japanese restaurant….I would love to see a new pizzeria/restaurant in the neighborhood….(by the way, got a flyer from one on Ave H)…Although I have used San Remo’s for many years, I regret that I no longer enjoy…they seem a bit too pompous since they have tried to become a “restaurant”…shocking to be sitting in the back and hearing screams from the workers in front yelling for deliverymen…NOT FUN!… also, the food no longer seems truly Italisn….I do not even want to begin on their prices….especially the beer….had to get it off my chest!

I am frackin thrilled about this. We need more japanese options than the cafe tibet sushi… woohoo!

Finally! I’ve been waiting for the day that I didn’t have to go to the slope for some soba.

    Fingers cross for yakitori!

    Yippee!

Dislike San Remo – high prices for mediocre everything. I suggest Palermo’s on CIA & Cortelyou. Lovely large pizza delivered for $11; fantastic meatball parm heros for $5.50 and has double the amount of meatballs than San Remo. Once had unplanned company and we ordered in veal & chicken parm – all loved the meals & we’re Italian.

Hooray! I love Japanese food. But I wish we’d get something else besides restaurants on Cortelyou.

    Hot diggity!! I cannot wait!!

yahooooooooo!!! sushi (hopefully) without driving into pslope. fabulous!

also…want to encourage people not to forget about pomme de terre. it’s such a wonderful restaurant. went last night and it was pretty sparse in there. the food was, as always, wonderful.

I second the praise for Palm de Terre. It is an relatively unsung neighborhood instalment. Have you had their fish n’ chips or spicy seafood stew w/ crispy polenta? It’s ridiculously good. Not to mention the all you can eat Cajun crayfish night on Tuesdays.
It’s high time Foster or Newkirk had a new restaurant addition.

Really happy to hear about a new Japanese place on Cortelyou, but I have to defend San Remo – we love it, we find the staff very nice in the back and the food is great. The Avenue H pizza place (much closer to us) is under new management, so I haven’t tried them yet, but I’ve heard it’s very good. Under the past owners, the pizza was outstanding. Worth a try.

I’m gonna go out on a limb and say that Pomme de Terre has one of the best strip steaks in NYC.

I second the wish for a good chewy, doughy, blistery, super thin pizza place. That pizza oven on a back of a trailer (http://www.pizzamotobklyn.com) at Brooklyn Flea churns out pretty nice pizza; why can’t a pizza place around here do the same? Just not into the dense crusts.

Hey Sycamore: here’s a thought.. can you build a pizza oven like theirs in the back patio? Pizza and beer… mmm.

@matt: re pomme de terre: i’m addicted to their pan-roasted chicken and the spinach. tho i don’t eat many of them, i always manage to take a (small) handful of their insanely good fries from my husband’s plate!

re bklynartiste: yes…great idea for sycamore! there’s a place in rome called ‘bir i fud’ and it’s beer and pizza. really really really good artisinal pizza.

I’ve tried San Remo, and it’s decent, but my boyfriend and I are big fans of Rocky’s on CIA and Church. The delivery is fast, the guys are super nice, and the pizza is excellent.

  • william

I second the vote for Rocky’s. I have had less than stellar pizza there before when Rocky himself wasn’t there, but he is almost always there.
