Catskill Bagel Closed by the DOH…Again

Saturday, February 4th, 2012

This afternoon, Ben noticed this scene at Catskill Bagel–seems the Cortelyou Road shop has been closed by the Department of Health, almost exactly seven months after being shut down for violations last summer. The DOH website (you’ll have to search by name) shows that they were inspected yesterday, February 3, and had 45 violation points (they had 69 at the July closure), for violations including these “critical” ones:

1) Raw, cooked or prepared food is adulterated, contaminated, cross-contaminated, or not discarded in accordance with HACCP plan.

2) Live roaches present in facility’s food and/or non-food areas.

3) Filth flies or food/refuse/sewage-associated (FRSA) flies present in facility’s food and/or non-food areas. Filth flies include house flies, little house flies, blow flies, bottle flies and flesh flies. Food/refuse/sewage-associated flies include fruit flies, drain flies and Phorid flies.

According to the violations, they also seem to have a problem with the plumbing, which is what the owner blamed the last closure on, at the time denying that they’d been closed by the DOH at all.

We’ll let you know when they’re back open, and what their explanation is this time around.

Following the inspector around with a video camera might just make him/her determined to cite you for something. And more generally, it’s easy to be Mr. Big Balls when it’s not your business and your livelihood on the line.

Fair enough, but being shut down on Super Bowl Sunday will certainly jeopardize their livelihood as much as anything. :)

And all that time I thought the Raisins on the  bagels were moving cause they were fresh!

I never said that there were no roaches or flies at Catskill.  In fact I’d be surprised if you can find a restaurant in NYC  that’s totally free from critters.  My only point is that the DOH system is not necessarily an indicator of whether it’s safe for a certain person to eat at a certain place, and I provided examples from my own experience.  Lots of people seem to be under the illusion that we can hermetically seal ourselves off from all things unhealthy and unsanitary, or that critters can be regulated out of existence, but it’s just not possible.  I’m glad that Catskill is being forced to sort out these problems, but I’ve never had a problem after eating there.

For the record, since it’s being discussed on this thread, I don’t think there was some sort of shakedown by the DOH here.  The fact that the DOH has a longtime reputation for corruption, though, is evidence that New Yorkers tend to take its ratings with a big grain of salt.

I think it’s ridiculous to judge a place by one DOH problem…. two huge ones in a year is something else…  I’ve a few really good sandwiches at Catskill, but I’ve also had some really terrible ones.  The last sandwich I had from there, maybe three weeks ago, it was the Brooklyn Bridge.  It tasted like a dirty fry cook apron, no joke.  It had that really old fryer grease taste to it…. and there’s nothing on there that should have been deep fried. This is also the place where I’ve seen orders get lost between the large amounts of people behind the counter.  When they’re ‘on’, they really make some good food, but more often than not they don’t have it together. The kitchen seems completely disorganized if they have more than two orders in at the same time.  They need a good manager and some consistency in their food quality.  Unfortunately the damage is already done for me.  I can’t see going back there unless they make major changes.  It’s a shame because there aren’t really any solid breakfast places on Cortelyou where you can sit down and have a quick bite. (please correct me if I’m wrong, and George’s doesn’t count).

You, the public have huge power over the resturants in the hood. They all read this and react in some form…keep it up and express your food feelings and you are heard…

    Love John’s bagels.
He’s been here before anyone else and never gets closed down.

Hmm. I wonder if he’s getting shaken down by the DOH.
