Local Holiday Shopping – Part 3
Friday, December 18th, 2009
This final installment of holiday shopping may be the most enjoyable. Think fabulous massages, lovely dinners, some stretching and some dancing. Please check the websites and call practitioners for the most current pricing and availability.
Feed your body:
The Farm, Purple Yam, Picket Fence, and Pomme De Terre all offer gift certificates for any amount, and while it may be more pleasant to dine in, you can also order the food to go.
For those nights that you’d rather have simple, good, home cooked food, and lots of it, delivered for a price of take-out, consider calling Chelsi and Graham Meyerson of Tastebud Events (they also cater large dinners and parties) or Lisa Eisen of Lucky Lu.
Tastebud Events offer dinner delivery two nights a week (Mondays and Wednesdays), take last minute orders and will accommodate most any dietary restrictions. You can see the menus for the week ahead online, and its a super wonderful treat for those households who are remodeling their kitchens, have just had a baby, or simply would rather have someone else do the cooking once in a while.
Lucky Lu, a private chef, is happy to give you a lesson in how to cook, or will do the work herself. You can treat expecting or new parents , or someone recovering from an illness to a week or two of delicious and good food; or have Lisa help you recreate a favorite honeymoon meal. There are many gift ideas and lovely specials on her site right now, like “Try Your Luck” and “Lots of Luck” offering 15-20% off for those wishing to give it a try. And possibly only in New York can you give someone a gift of The Shopping Trip.
Treat your body:
This neighborhood is teeming with excellent massage therapists you can visit, and many will make house calls as well. Check out Third Root, Midwood Wellness, Fusion Therapy Spa , NYAcutherapy or call Kym O’Neall at 917 841 4633. When it comes to acupuncture, you can’t go wrong with Laurel Axen Carroll of Ancient Current (she is also a labor doula), or you should check out the practitioners at Third Root. Frances Dunston of Fusion Therapy Spa is offering massage specials during December – 60 minutes for $65 – many, many loyal local customers swear by her.
When it comes to staying fit, maybe getting a gift of a bunch of classes may be the way to go (and hopefully someone will open a gym around here sometime). There are many excellent yoga opportunities, pilates, martial arts and dance. Latin Fever Dance Studio, Third Root, Namaste Yoga, Midwood Martial Arts and Family Fitness Center, and Urban Martial Arts are the main studios, all with lists of classes for both adults and children, and gift certificates for sale. Pilates on Rugby is a favorite with many local parents, with classes right after dropoff at school.
Sometimes everyone could benefit from a bit of extra attention or motivation – and there are people in the neighborhood to help with that too. Please consider calling Jessica Ingber of FITT over 40, Elyce Semenec of House of Yoga, or Rebeca of Yoga for You. They all come well recommended by various neighbors and will work with you to develop routines that work for you and that you may actually stick with.
As always- please email and add your endorsements and favorite places in the comments section.
