Oscars at 773

Sunday, March 7th, 2010

Cablevision customers — that is, almost everybody in this part of Brooklyn — can’t see the Oscars tonight because of a dispute between the cable and ABC7, which is airing the show.

But the Oscars will be on at 773 Lounge, on Coney Island Avenue just south of Cortelyou.

They have DirecTV, says the bartender, “because we’re classy like that.”

Alternately, Cablevision says they’re making their pay-per-view movie selection free as a kind of consolation prize, so you staying home is an option.

If you know of any other local spots showing the ceremony, let us know.

UPDATE: ABC just came back on, a little before 9:00 p.m.

Great…. except my pay-per-view refuses to load a movie!! Erro (VID 206) Please try again later!

ABC is the guilty party with regard to the pulling the channel issue, BUT that doesn’t make Cablevision any less of a crap as company.

    Oscars are on the air.
But don’t refrain from enjoying them at 773.

J, we had the same experience. No Oscars, no on-demand. Beh.

Watching Oscars right now from my home. Even caught the red carpet preview which started at 7pm.

Don’t have cable. Watching Oscars on my digital converter, cable-like reception. I refuse to pay a ridiculous cable bill. And no, I don’t want to pay less by subscribing to 2 services I don’t use: a landline and 200 channels. It’s like being asked to supersize your order for extra fat you don’t need.

Amen! I called THE cable company 3 times in the same day. I described what I wanted over and over again (“My internet and home phone providers are none of your business, and not the issue. I’m calling you, the cable company, to give you money for providing cable to me, thus becoming your customer. Can’t you just tell me what my options are and what they cost?”).

I got three very different prices for exactly the same service from three different reps, all within the same day. When I would say, “Thank you for the info. I’ll have to call back,” two of them immediately said things like, “Wait! What service do you have now? What price did you see on the internet, because I can beat it? We’re gonna be in the neighborhood anyway, so we can hook it up and you can cancel it later.”

NO THANKS. I have a digital antenna that provides far more TV than I’ll ever watch. I saw most of the Oscars tonight, complete with a banner (appearing for a few minutes early in the broadcast) explaining that the cable company and ABC aren’t getting along. Earth shattering… Run for the hills everybody! Seriously, I’d rank this concern somewhere around #625,000 on my list.

It boggles my mind how much control cable companies have in areas. ONE choice. No wonder prices are insane for basic services. To me, it’s a total ripoff. As it is, I already pay for their cable internet, which I need, but find it outrageously priced. $50/month??? Ridiculous.

HD signals are free with an indoor radio shack antenna. Some clever people have even made them out of coathangars…

I had to cancel my Oscar party, and am now desperately hoping that my co-op will call Verizon and get Fios installed for the building internet. And I’m buying an antenna TODAY.

    Down with Evilvision!

At least you guys get internet. My apartment can’t.
We have DSL i suppose, except it goes out every 15 minutes.

I love it that the Oscars weren’t on TV, but maybe I’m the only one. Sigh.
