Palermo Pizza Seized by the Taxman

Thursday, December 8th, 2011

Palermo Pizza, located on the corner of Coney Island Avenue and Cortelyou Road, has been shuttered for nonpayment of sales tax. Neighbor Michael Milch noticed the grim orange sticker yesterday, and they are still closed, and not answering the phone of course, today.

Edward Walsh, spokesman for the Department of Taxation and Finance, tells me that the business is listed as Il Villaggia in the warrant records, and it has three open warrants from 2007-2011 for sales tax amounting to over $45,000.

Being seized by the state does not mean the end of the road for a business, though, and they may still reopen once they work out what they owe. However if they don’t, the state can auction off the restaurant’s property to try to make up for those unpaid taxes.

  • DEATH AND TAXES

Pay your taxes.  This is the 2nd tax seizure on Cortelyou Rd, Vox Pop being the first.  We citizens benefit from taxes collected.

Uh-oh. Get ready for the “Palermo didn’t pay bribes to the taxman” rants to start soon.

Why? Is there some reason to believe that the state is being inconsistent or unfair in its enforcement of our tax laws?

Beware, the taxman cometh!  And he knows how to find our neighborhood.
