Pomme de Terre Closed

Wednesday, April 7th, 2010

Pomme de Terre closed rather abruptly a couple of days ago. The word on the street is that it will reopen in three months as more of a tapas place. (Gary and Alison of the Farm on Adderley won’t be able to answer your questions abut the PdT either, though they’ve been getting a few: they left PdT about 6 months ago).

Very Very Sad, and if that’s the case, let’s pool our money and take it over! We could co-op it! Buy shares and have dinner one nite a week..if Vox could do it?

Sigh…I will miss PDT..we ate there on every ocassion. Their skirt steak was fabulous and their deserts..sooo yummy…definitely will miss you.

Im sure the ‘real story’ whatever that may be will come out soon…sure hope someone can save it from extinction.

  • slick

I go out pretty often, but was never very excited about PDT. It might be me, but they need to keep costs down.

I agree Purple Yam is in trouble (even though they dont know it yet). The menu is confusing, and the restaurant is very discouraging for repeats

  • Eleanor

Steve – you are right that Picket is not as good as Dizzy’s (and others are right that Dizzy’s is too crowded and a bit pricey.)

But I did go to Picket in the last week and I thought it has gotten better. It dropped a bit after the change in ownership (although they also had problems under the original ownership at times) but in my visits over the last few months everything was tasty and service had improved. Anyone else agree or disagree about recent experiences there? (I’m curious because for a while there was a big Picket backlash.)

  • Steve

I like Picket Fence and have had plenty of good meals there. I’ve had a few bad ones, too, including one this weekend with a problematic hamburger. Still, on the whole I’ve had decent luck there. Some of their dishes are definitely better than others and I think the key is just finding the things you like there. They do a garlic rubbed skirt steak that I like and lots of folks rave about their mac and cheese.

  • Rob

Picket Fence is by far the worst restaurant in Ditmas Park. I’ve eaten there multiple times, had it delivered, breakfast, dinner, ect. Poor service and the food is inedible. I’m honestly surprised when I read differently on here – I would say maybe I am in the minority, but that’s not the case.

  • bklynartiste

Picket Fence is hit or miss. Often miss for me. :( But I have to say, their Smoked Gouda Mac and Cheese is consistently fantastic!! They’re worth keeping in the neighborhood just for that!

  • Steve

What sort of food is available at Solo and can anyone comment on it? Maybe you’ll inspire me to drop by this weekend.

  • http://www.frogma.blogspot.com bonnie

My only complaint about Picket Fence is that sometimes you get there, and you’re really hungry, and the tables on either side of you have popcorn & you don’t get any until you flag somebody down. But I think the food is always pretty good & oh yes, the Smoked Gouda Mac & Cheese is fabulous.

So sad to see it go. Seriously if they are gonna open up a new place we need either a really good bar with TVs for major sporting events, good beers on tap and awesome bar food for a regular hang. Good diner like a Dizzy’s would be slammin’. Was just craving bacon and eggs the other day and nowhere around here to order breakfast…unless, I’ve missed something.

Ugh, Pomme de Terre was the best thing about Newkirk Ave. :(

  • AB

So sad about PDT…although the last meal was not as good as I remembered the time before…the fish and chips. So maybe something happened regarding their chef? But still it was a nice thing to have around your home, you could just walk over. They will be missed! I’m not that crazy about the Tapas idea. But it’d be great to open a sports bar like 200 on FiFth Ave!!!

  • Jamie

To me, Pablo’s in Newkirk Plaza is a perfectly serviceable diner. There’s really not much to making an omelette.

  • http://shaynasteele.blogspot.com singjazz

Exactly, 200 fifth is awesome. As far as Pablos goes, when I google it, one of the first things to catch my eye is how many violations they’ve had against them in 2009 from the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. They were shut down in December for a few days because of 50 violations. I think I’ll pass, but thanks for the info Jamie! :)

  • Frenchie

Why does everyone here want all the same businesses that Park Slope has? Why did you leave in the first place then? I’m really trying to understand this because in Europe we are much happier to live in a smaller apartment and be able to walk to things we like instead of having a larger place farther away. It is more urban, more social, plus it is much better for the environment to not drive everywhere.

Is it just now that Americans are figuring this out? I’m sure I could move to Ditmas Park and have much bigger space for what we pay now, but the quality of life is far greater being able to walk out your door on a night like last night and be able to be eating outside at one of the many great restaurants and bars in our neighborhood without taking a car, without taking the metro. Then you can have one bottle of wine to yourself and just walk home. No drunken driving. :)

Isn’t that what living in a big city is all about? I’m sorry that this place is closed even though I did not think it was so good, but I can’t understand why people are talking about all the things they used to live near and liked but then decided to leave.

Anyway, Dizzy’s and 200 Fifth are terrible. It’s funny that those are the places you like, and no one seems to know about Canaille, which is some of the best French food in the city.

  • girlacross

Bummer. Loved PDT even though they stopped making the chicken liver mousse, which was my crack. Fo’ reals. But what really sucks is that I recently discovered their brunch. Unlimited mimosas??! Je suis désolée.

“I have had two meals at Purple Yam and have been thoroughly unimpressed in spite of really wanting to like them.”

You know, I totally have to disagree with all the Purple Yam agita. Their spring rolls were fantastic and Chicken Adobo is worth going back for again and again and again . . .

  • Travis [McGee]

I’m with James–I wonder if something happened to the chef. That place was always full, and it was developing a reputation. For a newish restaurant of its scale, it must have been meeting its revenue projections. There must be more to the story….

  • Jamie

I’ve always assumed that restaurants’ health code violations have much more to do with the owners’ unwillingness to pay the inspector a bribe than any real unsanitary condition.

  • Jaguar_Gorgonne

I am trying to figure out why Frenchie left France and why he reads this blog if he lives in Prospect Park.

  • Jaguar_Gorgonne

    I mean Park Slope.

  • Frenchie

I think this is a very nice blog and I enjoy reading about Brooklyn neighborhoods. I left France many years ago to take a wonderful job here in New York. I think Park Slope is a nice place, but I guess I should not talk about it here. Just thought it was ok question since so many people were talking about places in Park Slope they liked. Jaguar, I think we were both asking the same question though…I don’t understand why everyone is talking about Park Slope here when this is for Ditmas Park. I don’t hear everyone in Park Slope talking about Ditmas Park so if one moves to a new place they should accept it for what it is and not try to turn it into something else. So actually I think we agree. Park Slope is not perfect. No place is. You really should try Canaille Bistro though. Very nice place.

  • Melissa

I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again. Pablo’s could really fill a void if it would just close for a week for a 10k renovation. 5k even… it’s frickin’ DIRTY. I’ve been once and almost left because the filth creeped me out so much. I mean, is it really so hard to clean empty equal packets off a table and wipe it down before someone else sits there?

If they clean it, they will come….

  • DitmasSnark

I loved Pomme de Terre, but this comes as no surprise. I always thought they were a bit too far ahead of the gentrification curve down on Newkirk.

  • Anna

Frenchie, not all of us live in DP for more space.
I live in DP because it’s what I can afford. I have a small studio and it’s a good deal but still more than I can comfortably pay. I’m certain I wouldn’t be able to afford it if I moved into the neighborhood today.
Frankly, I’d live in Park Slope if I could. But my studio can’t get much smaller, and I can’t part with any more money. So DP works.

  • http://shaynasteele.blogspot.com singjazz

200 fifth sucks? Yeah, if you’re going to actually have a decent meal. I go for the world series or an occasional NCAA championship game and a beer. Not talking about food, Frenchie, just talkin’ about a good hang…There are certainly many more bars with great food I prefer in Brooklyn over 200 Fifth…it’s just one example.

There’s nothing wrong with wanting more for Ditmas Park. I love it here. It’s great. Just need more to do. and a decent nail salon, bodega and yes, a sports bar.

    Okay, done. Love ya DP.

  • Steve

I can only speak for myself, but I when I left Park Slope, I left because I did not care for Park Slope. My wife and I looked at places in lots of different neighborhoods, including Bay Ridge, Williamsburg, Prospect Heights, Midwood, etc. We ended up in Ditmas because we liked Ditmas. That doesn’t mean that we thought Ditmas was perfect. There are some things in the Slope we wish we could have brought with us. Indeed, there are things in Bay Ridge, Prospect Heights and Midwood we’d like to bring here as well. That’s life I guess.

  • Steve

“I don’t understand why everyone is talking about Park Slope here when this is for Ditmas Park. I don’t hear everyone in Park Slope talking about Ditmas Park…”

No, everyone in Park Slope is talking about having been priced out of Manhattan. Go to Manhattan, and everyone is talking about having been priced out of some Manhattan neighborhood. People are strange.

  • CT

“Also re: comparison… I was also kind of PUTTING DOWN the Slope, saying if a place as bourgie (Clay Pot anyone? Finance folks and lawyers buying up everything)”

Hey, coolbrooklynguy, Fyi, The Clay Pot has been on 7th Ave since 1969, when it not only wasn’t “bourgie,” but probably wasn’t even called Park Slope.

  • Margo

I lived in Park Slope for a year, hated it, and moved to DP. And I love it there.
    Representin’.

  • Ditmas Newbie

Ditmas Park was my neighborhood of choice when I started looking earlier this year. I moved to Kensington 4 years ago and realized immediately I should have come here. I lived in Park Slope 20 years ago when it was cheap and couldn’t wait to leave. I’ll go there for dinner and visit my bartender buddies, but there is no neighborhood I’d rather live in than DP! Now, the poor folks in Kensington REALLY need some better restaurants. One of the many reasons I left. Anyone want to start a flame war about Kensington (just kidding).

  • Frenchie

Ok ok, everyone hates Park Slope. I understand now. I guess that’s why it’s one of the most expensive neighborhoods around. No one likes it.

Enjoy your blog. You’ve given me a nice taste of Ditmas Park here. Very friendly people.

  • Steve

Chill, Frenchie, chill. I think people don’t like comparisons to Park Slope, because they often cast Ditmas Park as the runner-up, or the cheap substitute, when in fact Ditmas has a whole lot going for it, a totally different vibe that’s deeper than just the number of restaurants per capita. We’re all very invested and prideful of our neighborhood, and we can get a little too defensive sometimes when Park Slope is invoked on the blog. I think a lot of people on this blog (myself included) have a hard time expressing that we love Ditmas Park, but wouldn’t mind having a few things Park Slope has, but we want to keep the essential Ditmas spirit.

Disclosure: I currently work with Canaille Bistro.

I enjoy the passion everybody has for their respective neighborhoods and restaurants. I stumbled upon Canaille several years back and it immediately became one of my favs. My fiance and I have become good friends with the owners Philippe & Marie. Just recently after MANY dinners I offered my services to help them grow their business. I say all this because I personally think Canaille is a really good French restaurant. So much so that I want them around for as long as I live in the Slope.

P.S. I plan on exploring more of Ditmas Park this spring/summer. Please send suggestions on where I should start!

  • Jane

Forget Park Slope! I am so upset about PDT!!!!!!
Came there yesterday for brunch and kissed the closed door.
It was my favorite restaurant in the area. With all my love for the Farm, I preferred brunches and dinners at PDT.
    Why? Why?

  • AFunk

We are very disappointed that our frequented corner Bistro closed. We work in Midtown and live in Midwood. Of course we love “The Farm”, “Picket Fence” and “Purple Yam” But Pomme De Terre was just a bit closer to us and was always perfect. On Ave. J next to Difara’s Pizza we’d love a non-kosher French bistro to open ….Yea like that would happen!!

Someone please post what actually happened??

When I heard the news, it was like I lost a dear friend. I wonder if it was the location? It was a courageous attempt. We certainly tried to visit them often.

  • BrooklynSharon

Interesting to read all the comments here. Actually went with friend to have dinner, last Thursday, only to learn that PdT was closed! (We both loved their chicken!)As a Midwood resident, I enjoyed The Farm, Picket Fences(good turkey burger and pickle)Mimi’s and of course PdT.Loved the ambiance there though the small size and warm decor that made it cozy, also sometimes caused huge waits.Never have made it to Purple Yam. Have heard mixed reviews. I appreciated the proximity of these establishments, without having to go all the way to the Slope for a nice dinner or brunch. Would love something closer to this nabe, though everything around here is of the Kosher variety. As a neighbor of Ditmas Park, I love your nabe as well as the Slope. OK to love both? Will definitely try Canaille after reading comments here! Will surely miss PdT. RIP

  • NaughtyLadie

So sad :( . PdT was my favorite neighbourhood place. I had dinner there with my hubby and son a few weeks ago and the food was delicious as always. I love Tapas, but I just don’t see a Tapas place being as wonderful.

  • http://www.classicwhitney.com Shawakaknocka

For those of you who are so reliant upon your dwellings to define you, I offer you my sympathy. I’ve always loved Ditmas Park, but the advance of the image freaks is frightening. Re: PdT…I saw the writing on the wall months ago. My partner and I noticed neglect in the upkeep of the place, and the energy was amiss. I will definitely miss our little Sunday night spot.

  • DitmasMs.

What a shame to see that Pomme de Terre is closed. Ditmas Park will definitely miss it. We are lucky though that we have other new restaurants to fill its void. The Purple Yam on Cortelyou is great. I dont know why everyone is bitching about how small and expensive its dishes are when they use organic and exotic ingredients which seem like they would be much more expensive to buy. I love their food (mmmmm goat curry!) and am so happy we have something a little more unique in our nabe. Also Mimi’s is amazing and we have a new Japanese place opening up soon. Go Ditmas Park!
