Rancho Alegre

Wednesday, March 9th, 2011

Last week in the comments, AB mentioned the opening of Rancho Alegre on Newkirk Ave, between East 16th and East 17th Streets. It’s been open about two weeks, taking over the space that the Mexican bakery used to occupy. The menu (click on the pics below to view them larger) makes it seem like a fairly standard deli, with a few Mexican options. Inside though, there are signs for tortas ($5.95) and specials, and they have $1.50 tamales in the afternoon, and so that’s more promising.

I stopped in this morning and ended up going off menu when I asked if they had any tortas in the morning, with eggs. They didn’t, but they made it up, and it was a really good sandwich, especially the bread. I’m looking forward to trying some of those tamales.

They close pretty early (6pm weekdays, occasionally later on the weekends) and they don’t deliver, so you’ll have to stop in one morning or afternoon to investigate for yourself.

Ooh, bummer. I was happy to read about Rancho Alegre opening but I kinda liked the bakery, too.

The bakery was owned by the same guy who runs Karina Grocery next door on Newkirk–but he also runs the La Nueva Union bakery on Cortelyou, so you can still get the same stuff, just a few streets away!

Oh that reminds me, it looks like they’re doing some remodeling work at Melanie 2009, that Spanish spot on Newkirk.

Not sure if they’re just renovating or if someone’s opening up a new biz there.

Looks yummy! Just like the egg tortas I had in Mexico!

It looks delicious!!! I haven’t tried it out yet, but will do soon! And just so you know Frijoles (black beans) on any sandwich (even a turkey or ham sandwhich) makes it super delicious, healthy option for those who want to skip the Mayo.

How do they do any business if they close at 6pm? Senior citizens?

I’d love to try it, but I have a job :-/
