The DOH and Di Fara

Wednesday, November 23rd, 2011

Last week, Di Fara in Midwood quietly announced on their Facebook page that they’d be closed for a couple of days–nothing new, that sort of announcement pops up on there all the time. But then they noted a “glitch” with the Department of Health grading system was at fault, and by now, everyone knows that they were closed down by the DOH for 67 violation points.

Around our area, we’ve faced closures by the DOH, and many of you have said it doesn’t make much of a difference–that you’ll still patronize the place once they’ve gotten their act back together, and that you don’t put much stock in the grades in the first place. (Of course, there are many of you who do.)

Clearly, Di Fara will be okay–their fans are fanatics, one even offering legal services if the family wanted to face off against the DOH.

So does evidence of mice and inadequate personal cleanliness–and a history of failing inspections–make you think twice about returning to Di Fara? Or do you have a number of other reasons why you’d avoid the popular pizza place?

$5.00 for a mouse poop and hair slice? Um, no thanks.

  • Art Vandelay

This doesn’t phase me at all. DiFara’s is no worse than many places that receive A’s and is better than many. I’ve been flabbergasted by some of the filty, rodent and bug infested places I seen earn an A rating from the DOH and equally flabbergasted by some of the spotless, practically sterile places that received lower marks. There’s something going on here. I have a sneaking suspicion that DiFara’s received a low grade because he didn’t PURCHASE a high one.

It’s true. I can’t believe some of the places I’ve seen with A grades. It always strikes me as odd. Still, the $5.00 a slice is enough to keep me away. It’s good pizza but not that good.

If you know this to be true, expose it. Post a video on YouTube, since you have access to see the rodent and filth and could easily blow the lid off the case. I mean, given the tens of thousands of restaurants in NYC, it’s kind of hard to imagine this story is a big secret, if it were true.

That said, I tend to consider the violations themselves…I’m more inclined to be concerned with a cockroach infestation than a hair net issue. And if I like a place, a B grade won’t stop me eating there.

  • anonymous craig

it is organic rodent poop, if that makes a difference to the foodies out there.

  • http://www.twitter.com/mmcwatters mmcwatters

Organic, fine. But is it artisinal?

DiFara’s was on my walk home from work, and I’ve had dozens if not hundreds of slices from there.  I remember when slices were $2.50 or so.  I’ve never once gotten sick as a result.  I agree with Art that this is a case of the Health Department inspector not being paid off.  This is NYC, after all – I’d be surprised if there’s a single building in the city free of roaches and rodents.

In fact, I was shaken down by a DOH employee the other day, and I don’t even own a restaurant. It was at gunpoint, to boot. No, I didn’t get a description of him, and I didn’t think to snap a photo of his fleeing city car, and there were no witnesses, and I decided not to report it to the police or the news. But it’s true. Absolutely.

  • Anti-car

Giving a bribe to a DOH guy is the same as cops fixing a ticket…come on, mmc, get off your high horse and be real…if you dont pay off a DOH guy you get screwed.

  • http://www.twitter.com/mmcwatters mmcwatters

    I’ll ask again: evidence?

  • http://www.twitter.com/mmcwatters mmcwatters

Oh, wait…there is evidence of bribery, except it’s the restaurant owners trying to pay off the inspectors: http://gothamist.com/2011/06/04/dirty_restaurant_dont_bribe_the_hea.php

I’m not saying it isn’t true, but I don’t see why asking for proof instead of just screaming conspiracy puts one on a high horse. And where were you when less beloved restaurants were shut down? C’mon, you like DiFarra’s, and that’s cool, but I know people who’ve been there who’ve commented on the less-than-sanitary conditions.

The only thing that would keep me from Difara is their increasing price of a slice…

  • Crusty

The last time I was at Dj Fara’s garbage was falling out of the garbage cans and flies swarmed above all of the tables.  It was so bad that I wondered if I had a moral imperative to call DOH- I did not.  It may be that other restaurants are as filthy, but thankfully I have never seen them.

Di Fara’s was closed for evidence of live mice, flies, and problems with personal cleanliness.  These don’t seem to be minor technical infractions, nor do they seem to be the sort of thing that a corrupt inspector could make up.

On the part of the attorney who offered to volunteer legal services, oh please, with a DiFara slice at $5. and the announcement of a Las Vegas branch, I think the family is doing OK!

  • Art Vandelay

You’re absolutely right. You could drop a hydrogen bomb on DiFara’s and you still wouldn’t get rid of all the cockroaches. This is NYC, eternal kingdom of the cockroach.

  • Art Vandelay

Speaking of evidence, where is yours?

  • Art Vandelay

Regardless of whether DOH people are being paid off or the DOH is just extremely incompetent when it comes to evaluating restaurants. The end result is the same: ratings that one must take with a grain of salt.

  • Ben

if di fara’s pizza has had health violations then i say keep them! it was delicious the way it was, mouse poop and all!

  • http://www.twitter.com/mmcwatters mmcwatters

Not being a restaurant owner myself, I can’t comment on the competence (or lack thereof) of the DOH. Yet, just looking at this photo on the Daily News website (!) I see two violations: touching food with bare hands, and no hair net. Since I’ve heard the owner also changes money, he’s also touching the food with the same hands as he’s handling his money: http://www.nydailynews.com/news/di-fara-owner-dom-demarco-sr-pizzeria-reopen-failing-health-inspection-article-1.981545

  • Art Vandelay

I don’t doubt for a second that there are violations present at DiFara’s…and at every other restaurant in NYC. I also think NYC needs a collective shrink to deal with its OCD.

  • http://www.twitter.com/mmcwatters mmcwatters

Art, you’re a funny guy. You asked for evidence, even though I was making no claim, but I presented it anyway (see photo). You said health laws = OCD. I guess that might be true…I’ll certainly eat at a low-rated restaurant if it’s good. But I stand by my statement that it’s irresponsible to claim that, because you love a restaurant, a bad rating means the DOH was demanding bribes. I have no dog in the debate other than that I’m tired of the tinfoil hat brigade claiming conspiracy every time they don’t like something.

  • Art Vandelay

I never said there was a conspiracy, but thanks for putting words in my mouth. I said there was inconsistency in the DOH’s ratings.  If you want “evidence”, go to a variety of restaurants and see what you find. I did. Sorry if that isn’t “dramatic” enough for you, but I’m sure you can find some other thread to troll.

  • Obdur8one

He wasn’t referring to you, Vandaly, but the others who were making that claim. You asked for evidence from him. You should read more closely.

  • Obdur8one

Also, you seem to be trolling. At least he’s not anonymous, like the rest of us. :-)

  • http://www.twitter.com/mmcwatters mmcwatters

Art, people have made bold accusations: that all DOH employees demand bribes or that (as in your case) they’re all incompetent. I’m merely suggesting that perhaps the violations are sometimes warranted. I apologize if this offends you. As for your troll comment, as someone else posted, it’s high irony to call me a troll when you post here anonymously. Have a nice day.

  • Art Vandelay

I never claimed that “all DOH employees” are incompetent. In fact, I’d be surprised if there’s not a single competent employee there. Nor did I deny that violations are sometimes warranted. And I don’t care what your name is.

  • Art Vandelay

It looks like one of us should, at any rate.

  • Dronning Maud

People do sometimes troll using their own names. Just look at Ann Coulter.

  • Fadda Mush

That’s what I am saying —! It’s not the DOH, but $5.00 for 1 slice??? Clip joint !!!

  • SCOGORDO

    NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
