The Old Fashioned Ice Cream Parlor

Monday, August 30th, 2010

Ditmas Park, assuming that the right spot can be found, is inching towards getting an old fashioned ice cream parlor.

Private chef Lisa Eisen and Prairie Rose Free, both Ditmas Park residents, have been diligently working on a business plan for an old-fashioned ice cream parlor, with an updated twist; offering small batch, hand-made ice cream and grown-up cocktails and sundaes, all under one sweet roof. It will be called The Old Fashioned, they email.

About a month ago Prairie applied for the Make Your Mark Contest with their shared business idea – and won one of the three grand prizes!  Prairie and Lisa were granted $5,000 in seed money to start their business and the opportunity to have a very memorable photo shoot with the legendary photographer, Annie Leibowitz. We’ll link to the image when it’s up.

In the meantime – bookmark their site – the logo and splash page for The Old Fashioned is up (designed by John Shannon, also a Ditmas Parker), and we promise to keep you up to date on their progress.

    Yum!

I’m not being snarky, honest question. What does “Farm to glass cocktails” mean?

By the way, combining getting drunk with ice cream is *very* appealing to me! :-)

Now for the snarky bit… there’s a beautifully renovated space where Giant Bagel used to be. Great location.

    Consider me excited!

  • Sharon

I really and truly hate to say this, but…

I heard the old Vox Pop space is available. :/

  • Natalie

Yay! So excited! This truly is a parlour of dreams!

  • Catharine

Cannot wait to get my hands on some tasty ice cream and a cocktail at the same time.

  • Brooklyngirl

Oh! I hope they can find a space and open in our neighborhood and not somewhere else in Bklyn!

  • Freddy

This sounds very cool…what about one of the stores on the north side of Cortelyou, between Stratford and CIA? Aren’t they still vacant?

Better yet, and I would imagine at a cheaper rent, there is a vacant storefront on Avenue H between the Q station and East 17th Street. Once the Avenue H staton reopens, there is a lot of foot traffic to/from the college. And if their product is unique and wonderful, people will go to them.

Sharon, I was thinking the same thing. It’s really terrible to lose Vox Pop, but, if we have to, this sounds like it could be a really great use for that space.

A community-centric space built around booze and ice cream sounds almost as good as a community-centric space built around booze and coffee.

  • Emily

I wonder who ended up getting that spot near the Q on Cortelyou…the “For Rent” sign is gone.

Also, I’m guessing farm to glass will mean fresh juice from locally farmed fruit in your cocktail? Maybe fresh herb/fruit infused liquers? I see this working a little bit like the Chocolate Room in Park Slope/Cobble hill, just with ice cream and more drinking options than dessert wine.

Congratulations on winning this contest! The $5,000 is great, but getting your portrait taken by Annie Leibowitz is priceless. Hope this venture gets off the ground soon!

I hope they open it in Ditmas Park – it’s just the kind of business that would thrive here. Plus, we’d love to see them every day!

Can we get a BOOKSTORE already? If they won a business plan contest then they must have their act together but I’m Irish, please don’t mess with my booze.

Also it might just be me but ethically, are we stearing children towards booze and adults toward gluttony?

Best of Luck though, seriously, no one likes to see empty store fronts in their neighborhood.

  • AB

Sounds wondeful!!! Can’t wait, and hopefully they can fill one of the empty store fronts!!!

  • LustyDyke

    I scream for ice cream!

  • bkforman

    I am all for it!!!!!

Definitely the rent is cheaper over by Ave H and E.17th street. Once the train line is complete there will be tons of foot traffic. College and High School students will benefit from the ice cream parlor. Plus we need more stores over by Ave H. Salud is great and it’s a start but a nice ice cream parlor would be a nice addition to the hood. A book store would also be lovely!

  • Martha

    I’m in!

  • mefranny

i’m new to the hood as of this summer and i was just saying that the one thing i feel like is missing is ICE CREAM! i would LOVE this!

  • KAB

    Can’t wait!

  • stpierreteach

What could be better than booze and ice cream? Fabulous idea!

I’ve been plumping (pun intended) for an old-fashioned ice cream parlor around here for ages. By an “old-fashioned ice cream parlor” I mean a spot where kids can gather for some old-fashioned affordable treats and hanging-out, with candy to buy up front, like Jahns in days of old. “Farm-to-glass cocktails” says “expensive” and “adult.” Nice concept, but not an old-fashioned ice cream parlor; more like a retro, air-quotesy thing. Seems like the most novel “twist” of all would be to do something with no “twist”…oh well.

    @inez_trrs & MoBeta:

“Don’t mess with my booze” but what about Rum Raisin?LOL

I feel your pain, but it’s hard for an independent book store to thrive in this neighborhood or in this day and age. Lack of space, all print is rapidly going digital(tablets, kindles, web), large book retails cornered the market, and we have a public library on argyle. Hell, the news stand at the train station barley sells magazines anymore. When I was kid, their rack was half the length of the store.

I wish the ice cream parlor luck and welcome it to the nab if it comes.
