Where Is the Chinese Food?

Wednesday, November 30th, 2011

It’s long been a complaint around here, but seriously, where is the good–or simply decent–Chinese food? Trying to find a tasty bowl of wonton soup is a disappointing task, and I don’t know that I’d recommend any of the ones I’ve tried in the area. In my head, I rate it all on a bad-to-meh scale.

So, dear readers, where do you go for Chinese food in the neighborhood? Is there anyplace you’d pick above the others? Or do you skip it entirely and trek to Avenue U (and if so, where do you go that’s worth the trip)?

Where's the best Chinese food in Ditmas Park?

I think Bo Bo Kitchen near the subway stop is the best in the area.

I have totally given up on chinese food in our neighborhood. I used to order from Yen Yen occasionally but have been dissapointed too often. Would love for a good new chinese place to open or to hear that there is one already here that I have missed

  • Cortelyou girl

I live on Bobo’s block and I have to say, it’s the worst Chinese food I’ve ever had. And given where we live, that’s really saying something.

Problem is that a comment like “best” is too arbitrary.  Everyone has different criteria for what makes one place better than another.  For example: I think that there are definitely dishes that Bo Bo does better than China Dragon, but I usually order from China Dragon because they have better soup and noodle dishes.  (Bo Bo used to have better dumplings, but I wasn’t thrilled last time they ordered.)  I haven’t tried Yen Yen, though, so if so many like them so much I might check them out.  But there are also places that didn’t seem to make the list, either.

I miss No 1 Chinese on Prospect Park West in Windsor Terrace – they were fantastic.  I wonder if they delivery to our neighborhood.

I agree that Bo Bo Kitchen is the best on Cortelyou (can’t speak for anything out side of this street)

We really like Yen Yen and have been ordering from them for years.  On a whim we tried Bo Bo – very good won ton soup, everything else dreadful. New Green House was worse.  Yen Yen is a little more upscale than the others.   I think the neighborhood could support another one.

Mr. Tong on Ft. Hamilton Pkwy and E. 2nd is better than all of the above, but I’ve still had better in other areas…

go to Sunset Park and get real Chinese Food from Brooklyn’s Chinatown.

  • Kimchihelen

This is the best Chinese restaurant in Brooklyn for Dim Sum on Saturday mornings. Authentic, inexpensive food and terrific service. Not quite what you would find in Hong Kong, but as good as I’ve found in over 30 years in NY!

we always end up with yen yen when we occasionally order out chinese. then again we stick with the same items every time [veggie lo mein, honey chicken and scallion pancakes], so there is a lesser chance of something going wrong.

Red Hot Szechuan on 7th Ave at 10th Street is the reliable option for Chinese food.  It’s a bit of a hike (10 minutes by car), but far better than our DP options.  Excellent steamed spinach dumplings.  The steamed options taste clean.  No dirty funky wok taste.  Or try Grand Sichuan in Bay Ridge.  Very good.

I think BoBo Kitchen is totally bland.  We also ordered from Red Hot (they delivered to us, we live at Cortelyou).  But I drove past Red Hot and saw they have a B health rating, so I don’t order from them anymore.  I’m one of those that cares about the grades and cleanliness, so that means something to me (and it means they are satisfied with 14+ violations.  At least grade pending suggests they’re trying to clean up).  I was sorry to see Bombay Masala fall to the same fate.

Yup, their regular menu is wonderful too, alas they don’t deliver to our nabe.

  • Hotlinez1001

Triple Z on Ave U is the closest good one, cheap, real deal, and no MSG.

  • Rosie

Red Hot Szechuan delivers to our neighborhood.

  • Rosie

I didn’t realize what a “B” rating meant…Thanks!  Also, that could be a probelm with ordering out when a restaurant isn’t in the neighborhood – you don’t always know what the rating is.

Yen Yen is probably the better of them all in the immediate neighborhood, in my opinion. However, you can’t get everything in one neighborhood. Plus, it’s good to get out to see other neighborhoods known for other foods.

If you want great Chinese, go to the Chinatowns in Brooklyn, Flushing, or Manhattan. Mr Wonton in Park Slope is decent too, for those who don’t want the typical ghetto takeout Chinese setting and a bit more variety and upgrade from General Tsos and Moo Shu Pork.

I do not order take out from Bo Bo Kitchen after they refused to come up the elevator building. Then, after going down to the lobby to pay, the delivery person had the nerve to look at me incredulously and say “What? No tip?!”.

Pacificana is our “go-to” place for dim sum.

What? No one giving any love to the “Number 1 Restaurant” on Church Avenue and Westminster? C’mon, it’s what Edward Hopper would paint if he were alive today! It’s where the guys on the next season of “Reaper” would have delivered the souls of the damned (in takeout containers, no doubt) if the show had been renewed! Has no one been morbidly fascinated enough by its smudged Lexan ambiance to even try their bags of chow?

    Reaper! Brenda, I love you.

I was wondering when someone would bring up Number 1, the Chinese restaurant with the best signage in the neighborhood.

Its amazing to me that they don’t utilize the BID signage assistance. Its so horrible and gross looking that I have never tried it even though it is right around the corner.

Family Garden on Foster. The people who run it are wonderful, and the food is very good.

  • Marguerite

We end up going to the restaurants in Bensonhurst…. It’s a trek, but worth it.

  • Margra

Red Hot Szechuan delivers to our neighborhood??!!

We live by Brooklyn College and order from Kam Shing on Ave H by the Q train and they are pretty good, but we really like Dynasty on Flatbush, right past Target. Maybe they will deliver into Ditmas Park. 718-338-6060. Their won ton soup was also pretty good. They are so clean they don’t need to ofter the free can of soda with a $10 purchase :)

Zen, on Flatbush and Clarkson, is a hidden treasure.  It’s vegetarian, but has the seal of approval from the meat eaters in my life.

That, in a nutshell, would be the sad irony of the BID. “Number 1″ sees no need for change…and probably, neither do their customers. Why mess with success? (As a friend from outside the nabe likes to observe, At least it’s not called the “Number 2 Restaurant”…)

  • Erin

    BoBo.

  • Rosie

You might want to call them and give your address.  They deliver to Cortelyou.

  • Ben

    +1 on Pacificana.
