Flag Football in Prospect Park

Tuesday, August 23rd, 2011

Do you know why I love fall? Football! But, instead of forking out oodles of money and trekking to Jersey, every weekend starting September 17 I’ll be cheering on my son’s flag football team in Prospect Park. I may even catch a Jets game—the leagues are registered with the NFL, so players receive a jersey with an official NFL team logo.

The NFL created a flag football league, which local clubs participate in, because moms like me worried each collision degraded their sons’ brains. Flag football is a sport where size doesn’t matter. Boys and girls compete with each other. And the best players aren’t the largest; they are the fastest. “This is like a glorified game of tag,” one mother told me last year.

Late registration for flag football is still open:

St. Francis Xavier Youth Sports Flag Football
$100-150 depending on child’s age, plus $30 late fee.
Games are played in the Long Meadow in Prospect Park.
Contact flag football director Tom Henderson at 888-SFX-1047 for more info.

78th Precinct Youth Council Flag Football
Another nearby option, there are two divisions for kids between 9 and 14 year old, and games are played in Cobble Hill and Park Slope. Email contactus@78pyc.org for more information.

And don’t forget the Brooklyn Skyhawks in our very own Parade Grounds!

It is really a great football tradition right here in our backyard, just read the news stories of where former Skyhawks are now on that site. (Although one of them is playing for Pitt this year, What’s up with that? Let’s Goooo Mountaineers!)
