Compost for Brooklyn

Tuesday, August 17th, 2010

A neighbor reminds us that the Compost for Brooklyn site on Newkirk and E8th is an easy spot for many Ditmas Parkers to take their scraps to:

So, I was taking a walk today and I noticed that on Newkirk and E8th there’s a compost garden that is open for drop-offs twice a week.  While maybe not technically in “Ditmas Park” for many of us it’s a quick walk and an easy way to compost (especially for those of us in apartment buildings).  I was recently visiting family in Northern California and was totally jealous of the city issued compost-scrap containers in kitchens.  Now I feel a little bit less jealous!

The website has what to compost and drop off times.

I am so happy that an eye-sore piece of land was turned into a compost collection garden! I always wondered why that corner was abandoned for so many years, and actually hoped for a Dog Park to open, but a community garden is just as good. I also noticed that the house right next to this land was demolished, and I wonder what will be put in it’s place? I hope it’s a dog park!! LOL And also noticed that the house next to St. Rose of Lima Church on the Newkirk Ave side, was demolished and wonder what will go in it’s place???? And I also noticed that a Charter school is opening in the old catholic school building. I guess it’s way better than having ANOTHER phone cards store or 99 cents store open in the area.
