Neighborhood Electrician – Alan Riback

Thursday, February 17th, 2011

I was having a cup of coffee with a friend this morning when Alan Riback, a neighborhood electrician highly recommended by our very exacting neighbors came by to swap out some lighting fixtures, outlets and a hardwired electric space heater. As the bell rang she asked “Is it Alan?” – turns out he’d done some work on their apartment as well.

So for the files: if you need an electrician who is licensed, and insured, will come as promised, be pleasant, very professional, quick, as well as reasonable, give Alan a call: 718 284 0920 or in emergency situations 917 327 7377.

Living in the neighborhood, he’s become an expert on old house electrical problems, but he will happily work on apartments as well, and in general does all kinds of electrical work – from installing a light fixture to rewiring a house to installing landscape and security lighting. His email is wirelights@aol.com if you have questions, want more information or references.

From experience – it helps to have a list of stuff you’d like him (or any electrician) to take care of/look at so that you don’t have to have them keep coming back – ends up being cheaper!

A happy customer, and happy to give my business to someone good in the neighborhood.

I enthusiastically add my strong recommendation for Alan Riback. Alan has been repairing and upgrading the electricity in our house for 17 years, and his work really holds up well! Most recently, he came to check out the relatively new lights in our bathroom. They had been dimming, then turning off, by themselves! After considering a few different possible causes, Alan told us that we were using bulbs with too high a wattage! He told us to take out the 75 watt bulbs, and put in 60s. The lights have been working perfectly ever since! He could have told us anything, and charged us a lot. But he was happy to solve the problem and move on.
Alan called a week later to be sure that everything was still working.
Thanks, Alan, for many years of good service, and for many more still to come!

Alan has worked for me at our home in Prospect Park South for nearly a decade. He rewired the house with new power from the street and entirely throughout. Because he has worked in so many Victorian Flatbush (Ditmas Park) homes and knows their quirks of construction (balloon framed, modified post and beam, diagonal bracing, etc.) he knows how to get the wires where they need to go with the least damage to plaster and paint. He understands modern alarm systems and modern telecommunications, network and audio-visual systems and can wire these for you. In the first 8 months of my project he worked with my construction manager and around carpenters, plumbers, heating/cooling contractors and others and helped create a sense of community on the job. You can’t overvalue what that does for a smooth renovation/rehabilitation project. He regularly does small projects for me now. He’s a great find and I endorse all of the comments above as well.
