Marty: Cortelyou "the new Smith Street" and other notables
Monday, February 16th, 2009
Somebody had to say it, and Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz put it in his State of the Borough Address:
Ever wonder who started the new restaurant boom in Ditmas Park West? It’s Gary and Allison Jonas, whose Farm-on-Adderly, Pomme de Terre, and Sycamore have turned the Cortelyou road area into the new Smith Street…. Ditmas Park West is now a dining destination!
He also noted:
At the Beijing Olympics Keeth and Erinn Smart – brother and sister fencers from Flatbush – exhibited so much “Brooklyn attitude” they both won silver medals for the U.S.A.
And finally, we can only dream along with Marty and hope Loews Kings does get restored – it would be so nice to walk to a nice movie theater:
When we talk about tourism and entertainment as economic development, I also must mention the Loews Kings Theater in Flatbush. The last “wonder theater” in the city that has not been subdivided. I had my first date in the upper-left balcony when I was 16, in case you were wondering. It was my first “couples” date, not with a group. Back then, it was considered “getting somewhere” to put your arm around your date’s shoulder.
But who my age didn’t have their high school graduation at the Loews Kings?
It’s been empty for over 30 years, and now I’m proud to say we are working with New York City EDC to select a developer-operator.
My dream remains that the Loews Kings will, some day in the near future, combine the Apollo and Beacon theaters right here in our borough and be an economic engine for Flatbush Avenue and all of central Brooklyn (Thank you, EDC President and Brooklyn resident, Seth Pinsky)
