Griffin B&B

Tuesday, August 31st, 2010

Griffin Bed and Breakfast opened Memorial Day weekend, and is the latest, very cool addition to the Dekoven Court Bed & Breakfast Row.

It is absolutely the place for you and your guests, if what you want is a mid-century modern feel rather than the well-appointed period Victorian that’s available at other great local B&Bs the Rugby Gardens. It is the perfect place for travelers with children in need of a calm, modern place aimed at soothing the spirit as well as body. The owners, Buck and Jeannine Umrigar, have two children of their own, are well travelled, and know exactly what one needs – you’ll find the fridge stocked as per your request, you can come and go at leisure, and there are no awkward breakfasts in the common dining room or worrying about kids accidentally smashing a turn of the century vase.

Here is a glimpse of what the space looks like. It has two queen size beds in the two bedrooms, one of which also has a twin sleeping quarter. Crib is available if needed.  There is a living area, kitchen, a fabulous shower, and in general – you get a well equipped suite  of about 1,000 square feet all to yourself.

You enter the calm space through a separate entrance on the side of the house on the beautiful tree lined block, and have complete privacy from your hosts. Their contacts:

web:      www.thegriffinbandb.com
email:    thegriffinbandb@optonline.net
phone:  (718)- 875- 7645

Rates: Single/double occupancy -$175 night +tax; Three /four persons- $275 night + tax; extra people upto max capacity of 6 $25 head. Special family rates depending on size of family and age of children, and for now a promotional rate of 7 nights for the price of 6. They have a fabulous website with more images and info here.

Guests are also welcome to enjoy the back yard, with its tire swing and deck for leisurely evenings resting from adventures in the city.

The place is tucked away, but really steps from the Q&B at Newkirk – exit on Foster, turn left on Rugby, and left on Decoven Court a few houses in, and you are right there.

Will you be offering this same kind of advertisement/article for all of the B&Bs in the neighborhood?

    BTW-
Rugby Gardens may be in a Victorian house, but the interior is actually authentic Art Deco eclectic. Lots of original paintings and sculpture.

We are affiliated with 7 other local B&Bs – http://www.VictorianBB.net

New businesses are often covered here. Asking about this with that tone is as if Ct Muffin commented that the new Cafe Madeline was getting attention that they weren’t. If you do something new/neighborly/different (as when ct muffin hung local art) I am sure you’ll get attention too. This is a new (and different type of) BB.

Any business that succeeds around here is good for the others, especially if DP becomes a BB destination.

I agree, Carissa. But you have to admit, this post does seem a little random and belated. It reads more like much-needed free advertising than as an announcement of something brand new to the neighborhood.

The people who run this site do a favor and a public service by being a conduit of information about everything from safety issues to someone who wants to give away extra eggs. As a reader and neighbor, this was of interest to me, as postings about other businesses have been. Thanks for the post, guys.

I meant to write it up as soon as I visited the place, which was a couple of months back, so yes, sorry it is a bit “old news”. I also reached out to all the other B&Bs, of which Rugby Gardens responded and I have every intention of visiting and writing them up some day. It is just that it is actually quite a bit of work, and yes, free advertising and I just don’t have that much time, so as Carissa says – yes, there has to be something else – something new or special. In this case – it is a new B&B which is a nice addition to the neighborhood. Thus the post.

Are all these bed and breakfasts legal? I assume that they are legal 1 family homes paying taxes as such and have no sprinkler systems etc. Would anyone want to have one next door to them?

    Haters, take a pill!

Curmudgen – as de facto commercial hotels, these are not allowed in Residence districts and don’t meet the definition of home occupation that the zoning permits in residence district.

However, the City seems to take the view that these are valuable additions to the city’s tourism industry, and as long as the innkeepers declare the income and the neighbors don’t complain, things go smoothly.

I’m not aware of any complaints about the four B&Bs now operating on that block.

According to State Law, there is a distinction between a single-family dwelling “converted” into a Bed and Breakfast vs. a multi-family dwelling for such purposes. Fire code for the former is similar to a house with a couple apaprtments — smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors.

I’m assuming there is a similar distinction in City ordinances that exempt single-family dwelling / bed and breakfasts from the hotel restrictions.

This dp post from last year was really helpful to me in finding a place for my family to stay this Fall:

Things don’t have to happen overnight for them to help the community, or be “new” news/business. It IS a lot of work, that we all benefit from, so thanks.

I am especially fond of our BB’s because they are what made us find DP- I performed a wedding on one of their porches in 2007 and fell in love that day- with the whole of DP. From that point on I watched for spaces for us to move into and might not have otherwise found DP.
