Remembering the Bookie

Neighbor Hillary Miller has a wonderful memorial to Sandy Tishcoff in the blog Mr. Beller’s Neighborhood. Sandy ran the beloved store Mostly Books on Cortelyou, and he passed away earlier this year. Hillary describes the outpouring of fond memories from neighbors at his funeral:

But as I listened to the memorializing, it was easy to wish that my relationship with Sandy hadn’t been restricted to childhood…. I was too young to know he made banana daiquiris once a year in the back of his store. I never visited his shop on Christmas, when he would stay open until the last frantic customer had left.

It’s a beautiful piece if you knew him, and it will make you wish you did if you didn’t. Be sure to check out the whole thing!

That was such a nice quirky indie bookstore of the old school…such a shame when it closed.

I have been a neighbor of the Tishcoffs for more than 25 years. Sandy and I had quite a few adventures together.

Like the time he and hazel loaned me their car last Spring to go to the Optimum Store and Sandy came along with me to keep me  company and out of trouble. On the way back, he told me about his college roommate and how he grew up on Beverly Road which was how Sandy was introduced to this neighborhood. By the end of the discussion, we figured out that his roommate was the uncle of my former sister0in-law and the husband of her Aunt Sally. (Uber small world – 26 years into the relationship) I got in touch with them and they called him to catch up much to his delight.

Sandy’s sweet tooth, slow and precise way of weaving a story are greatly missed.

We moved here in 1987, and finding Sandy and his store was an absolute highlight!  It was a second home to us and our kids.  He was a wonderful man, whom I delighted in seeing years after the store was gone.  I ope people will continue to tell Sandy stories to their kids, so that he will live forever.
