The Japanese House

There’s a unique opportunity coming up to get a peek inside one of the most famous homes in Victorian Flatbush. Gloria Fischer, owner of the Japanese-style house at 131 Buckingham Road, is opening it up for a tour on Sunday, November 20.

Built in 1902-1903, the Prospect Park South home was designed by John J. Petit, who Brownstoner notes was “was aided by three Japanese artisan/builders who oversaw the building, interior, and garden.” The offering price in 1903 was $26,500–more expensive than any others in the neighborhood.

The Fischers bought the home in the early 1970s, which was a considerably less prosperous time. After helping gain landmark status for PPS, Gloria worked with the commission to uncover the original colors of the house. The Times says the interior features “dragon figures in the stained-glass windows” and items that once belonged to Dr. Frederick Strange Kolle, the first person to own the home.
