A Peek at Market
Monday, February 1st, 2010
Welcome Market, Cortelyou Road’s newest store! This morning I was able to get a chocolate croissant, espresso and a glimpse at all the specialty food they are selling. This includes Anarchy in a Jar jams, a large selection of cheeses, gorgeous breads, olive oil, pickles and lots more. Here is a sample

The place is nice, I bought a few Mimi’s ingredients. Nice for a special treat, though I doubt I can afford to make this a regular stop.

Why does everybody want to share information such as “I doubt I can afford to make this a regular stop.” Who cares?

Beautiful store and the products look wonderful. Just like Mimi’s, there is a wonderful air of hospitality and comfort with just the right amount of hipness

if you don’t care, then you don’t need to make it a point to say so.

Camembert?!? YUM! Great looking stuff! I’m so happy they’ve opened (and on schedule! impressive!
)! I’m sorry I’m going to miss the mornings… I leave a tad bit earlier (7am) to grab a chocolate croissant.
boo hoo! -

Those breads look delicious… looking forward to checking out!
And for the one who asked, cost is relevant to a lot of us, and I’ve been wondering how pricy this place will be, so I appreciate the info. -

Just a few years ago, I stumbled mid recipe and could not find things like fresh mozzerella or even anchovies in oil on Cortelyou… Things I had taken for granted in almost any other neighborhood I’d live on two continents.

Just stopped in to check out the place. Really cute inside [tiny as expected] with lots of tasty bits and bobs. I had an espresso [they're only serving espresso, not other drinks] and, although I’m not normally a straight up espresso drinker, it was damn good! The people working there are genuinely friendly but not pushy about buying stuff. We walked out with a bag filled with assorted sundries and plan to make it a regular thing. Really glad to have them down the road!

Did they say when the wine bar next door is opening?

Finally good bread in the hood!!!! Crown Royal and Balthazar…what could be bad. Definitely a lot better than John’s bread. I hope they get some of Crown Royal’s Proscuitto bread.

Nice olives, I’m having some now, bought some feta and a chiabatta.
Not sure what the “French” feta is but will try it next time and glad to see buffalo mozzarella available.
A nice addition to the neighborhood. -

These pictures look amazing. Can’t wait to come in – esp. for the Anarchy in a Jar!

Amaunet says:
The French feta is a bit creamier than its Greek or eastern European counterparts. I walked out with a nice little bag full of things and will definitely be going back. They also told me they have additional stock which will be out tomorrow or the next day, so today’s selection is not everything that will be available.

I heard Avi say that the Wine bar next door (The Castello Plan) hopes to be open by Feb 22nd or so…

Yum, can’t wait for Saturday morning stroll! What a treat! And totally different than John’s, let’s not compare, I think this serves a different crave. Btw, did someone say Sycamore let’s you bring food in to their backyard? Market is going to rule that scene.

Where to begin?? I couldn’t be more excited to have such good stuff at my finger tips. Killer bread and lovely cheese selection. I won’t have to drag stuff home from nyc anymore!

I stopped into Market to “look” and came out with Fig Jam with Sesame, Tahini and two kinds of Olives. Yum, yum and yum. Was happy to see Pomegranate Molasses and was intrigued by the Date Molasses. I fondled the cheeses briefly and stared longingly at the Chocolate Bread but somehow, somehow, resisted those temptations.
At least for now….

A-Train says:
Please refrain from fondling the cheeses!

I’ll try…but no promises! BUT if they ever carry Burrata I’ll be powerless to resist. Hmmm….THAT with Prosciutto Bread and a nice bottle of wine…

chefesse,
I can’t imagine burrata at market but…
Make the trek to Coluccio and Sons.
http://dcoluccioandsons.com/We wanted to find burrata and asked Peter of Peter Pizza in Bensonhurst, after an Italian phone call to his Mother we were sent to Coluccio’s.
An amazing Italian store that imports their own olive oil and tomatoes from their properties in Italy.
The burrata was “sinful”. -

Anyone know if they’ll be selling specialty beers or growlers at any point? That would make me smile. Looks good otherwise!
Nothing wrong with saying a place is expensive we all have budgets and if you don’t then I want to be your best friend. If they sell quality products then that can be overlooked from time to time IMHO.

Rob says:
Agreed manco! Craft beers and/or growlers would be terrific, something akin to GRAB in Park Slope

Just poked my head into Market. I was super-psyched to find labneh and zatar. Neither was prohibitively pricey (although some of the cheeses will have to wait for a very special occasion, like the $12 manchego). They also have Israeli couscous, something I don’t remember ever seeing at the co-op. Note that they do accept credit/debit cards, but you need to spend at least $15. I can’t wait to try the prosciutto bread!

I bought two of the best sesame/hummus cookies I have ever tasted! And wonderful French feta and jam. But finding Stumptown coffee…now that was the greatest treat.

Alana, I knew you would make this a special place. It’s a talent you have and now other people can enjoy. As soon as the weather gets better, we’ll be out to visit.

Ahh Israeli Coucous is really hard to find. I get it at Whole Foods but they are always sold out-now I know where to get it.
