Fixing the Kensington Post Office

Tuesday, August 31st, 2010

The Kensington Post Office is notorious for its terrible service and for simply losing mail, but some residents in Kensington are working to fix it, and have some advice if you run into trouble:

If you experience problems (no delivery on a particular day; lost packages; etc.), here are some options:

1.      Call the local post office and speak to Mike Scalise.  He gave me three numbers to use:
•       718-436-0164
•       718-436-1082
•       718-686-7293

2.      Send an email to our neighbor Heather, who has set up a separate account to gather information regarding post office issues in 11218.  Heather compiles the data and forwards it to the Brooklyn Postmaster’s office on a regular basis.  She requests that when you write you are as detailed as possible, describing the issue, the date/time, and your delivery address.  The email address is:  kensingtonpohelp@aol.com

The people working on this have asked that their names not be printed, for fear of retaliation against their mail, which says a lot.

A friend just sent me this link to the video of an incident at that post office. The footage may be from three years ago but I think anyone who has had a bad experience there, as I have, can sympathize at least a little with the customer going postal (hah) on the clerk. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CdrqLrdYAr0

Let’s hope we can start to see improved service and thank you to those who are working to resolve the many issues there…!

While it’s fair to say that if Satan were a post office designer, he’d come up with a place sort of like the Kensington station, it’s also fair to say that, at least the past two or three times I’ve been in there, it’s been much, much better.

I used to wait upwards of 45 minutes just to pick up a package. Last few times, it was only five-ten.

The Post Office in Windsor Terrace PP West is awesome. never more than 2 people in line super quick. Intelligent helpful clerks. Even with the time to get over there it’s still faster.
I often see our mailman sitting in a car with his girlfriend smoking joints for hours at a time.

I have to say, Adelphi Stn in Clinton Hill definitely, definitely gives Kensington a run for its money, every day- speaking as a former customer.

I also wanted to chime in with praise for the Church Ave/Flatbush PO. I find the staff to be knowledgeable, friendly, and I’ve never had to wait, even on Saturdays.

That said, let’s see if my daughter’s passport gets created/processed correctly:) I’m holding my breath until her birth certificate is returned… turning blue now….

The Kensington Post Office has been better during the last few months with shorter lines and better customer service. Our mailman also misdelivers less frequently than in the past.

Does anyone know why a mail truck is parked for hours almost daily on Argyle near Ditmas whenever I drive by? An afternoon rendezvous perhaps?

The best PO is on 5th Ave in the low 60′s in Sunset Park.

On Argyle between Ditmas and Dorchester – for many, many months – our mail is delivered between 3-5pm.

On Stratford between Cortelyou and Dorchester – we also have our delivery between 4-5pm. I am befuddled & amused about how much mail I receive that’s meant for others even with apt numbers on the envelopes. Could it be because our mail carrier is distracted by his ipod and constant cell phone conversations? Customer service is an oxymoron with many businesses.
Also, recently I wanted to mail a small package to CA – it cost nearly $12; decided to return the item, order it online and have it delivered to CA for $5.00 – the post office is probably becoming obsolete anyway…

The Post Office is a fossilized remnant of another time…
