Parks Department Offices at the Parade Grounds Are Totally Disgusting

Friday, October 28th, 2011

You think your office stinks? The building at the Parade Grounds that houses the Park Enforcement Patrol and the NYPD’s Brooklyn South Task Force has been closed until further notice because of raw sewage that was overflowing into some areas–including their lunch room. Oh, there are also rats, which employees can hear crawling in the walls.

This has been an ongoing problem, and, according to A Walk in the Park, it’s only finally getting the attention of officials because the media has been reporting on it.

If there’s one positive (and really, it’s a stretch), it’s that they got an adorable cat that has been keeping “most” of the rats out of the building. You can see the cat briefly in this ABC 7 video. Thank goodness they haven’t developed smell-o-vision yet.

People say the stench is so bad they can smell it in adjacent buildings–anyone notice it while walking by outside?

No wonder they don’t clean the park.  They can’t even clean their own place.

First of all the map is pointing to an apt. building outside the Parade Grounds, not to the Parks building. Second, I have never smelled anything coming from the building and i have never heard of anyone smelling anything coming from the building itself (although I am sure it smells horrible inside). The trash truck smells like trash when you walk by and it is there (which it is in that video). Thirdly I have been living here for a while and I have never seen a rat (although plenty of cats).

I am glad though if this means the building will get some love and attention. The more love and attention to our side of the park the better.

I am actually amazed at how well they keep the park clean. Every single morning the Parade Grounds has an army of people do the circuit and pick up everything they see. It is such a volume that it is hard to get everything, but considering how much trash is generated I think they do a pretty amazing job. I make it a point to say thank you every morning.

These are the Parks cops (PEP).  not the Parks cleaners.

You know what would be really cool? Tearing the building down and building a new office / athletic center with dog run and indoor pool. Make it happen!

The issue at hand is not policing, it is the condition of this building.

I went inside to use their bathrooms once (back in June of 2010) and although not pristine, they are fine.  I was pregnant, so I had to pee constantly and I had little choice – but it’s not memorable for being particularly awful.  Must have deteriorated since then!!
