Progress at Newkirk Plaza

Tuesday, July 5th, 2011

They seem to be rolling along at Newkirk Plaza these days, where about half of the sidewalks have bricks at this point.

Additionally, we saw some activity in the old florist space, and it seems the bodega that’s on the right of the florist is taking over the space, hoping to make a deli with space for seating. Anyone hear anything more?

A deli/diner-type establishemnt would be very welcome there, especially if it is more low key (cheap) than Pablo’s across the plaza.

I think a diner/deli would be much better than a deli/diner. How about an automat instead…

That bodega just raised the price of a small coffee from 50¢ to 75¢, so forget about cheap.

Looks good at last after many years of promises and proposals.  Hope that this invigorates the plaza.  For years the only stores worth patronizing on the plaza were Almac and Nicks’ NewKirk liquors.

No elevator, we should have pick axes and torches.

What’s to become of the filthy lot on the corner of Newkirk and Marlborough? It’s a complete eyesore and there is always garbage there, including bottles labeled hydrochloric acid. It’s disgusting. And the tunnel that one must use to enter the plaza on the Marlborough side has been completely neglected in the renovations. Still no signs to indicate that it even exists. It’s still dirty and has awful lighting, which to me makes it a little scary at night. The whole renovation, from what I can see at this point, seems pretty half-assed and has basically done nothing to improve the plaza or the station in any significant way. Too bad.

Hey Pearl, Forget about ever seeing improvement on that lot. It used to be a gas station, so underground are huge gas and oil tanks, that leak, and the future builder there has to remove the huge tanks, clean the old oil and gas, and get it inspected. Therefore, all potential builders look elsewhere where it is cheaper to build. Unless you are a gas station, or a Jiffy Lube, you aint building there.

Makes sense. I guess they’re renting out parking spaces there instead of dealing with all that. Just wish they’d clean it up. It’s so depressing to look at every day.

If they are suppose to benches inside the plaza why not put some outside as well. That might be a cheap fix for that lot. Find a local artist who can spruce up the walls. Hope all this renov means better times for Newkirk Plaza
