Sign up for the Ditmas Park CSA

Monday, March 8th, 2010

The spring is in the air, and it’s time to sign up for the Ditmas Park CSA! Here is what the core group sent over:

Membership in the Ditmas Park CSA is now open for applications.

About Our Farm and Farmer:
Amantai Farm is run by Jorge Carmona, a Colombian immigrant (now a citizen) who works about 20 acres of land in eastern Pennsylvania. He has been selling at the Cortelyou Rd. Farmers’ Market through the Greenmarket Program for the past 5 years.  He grows a diverse vegetable crop, raises bees and has some laying hens. While he is not certified organic, he does not spray anything on his crops. This is better than many certified organic farms because they tend to spray organic pesticides and fertilizers and also because many of them are much larger scale and futher away, thus a lot of fossil fuel burning is involved in getting their product to our tables.

How Does the Ditmas Park CSA Work?
Members of the Ditmas Park CSA purchase a full or half share of produce, which they pick up at the determined pickup location once a week.  The season is 20 weeks long and begins in mid to late June. Members receive a weekly box of their share of produce, a full share amounting to about enough produce to get fresh veggies into the diets of a family of four for the week. For a smaller family, it would mean vegetable-based meals for the week.  Details about the share options are below.

Distribution
Distribution this year will continue to be held at Third Root (http://thirdroot.org/), which is located 380 Marlborough road, just off of Cortelyou.  We are extending distribution to two days.  Full produce shares will be distributed on Tuesdays from 4:30pm-8pm, and half produce shares will be distributed on Wednesdays from 4:30-8pm.

Produce Share Options
Produce (Vegetables and Melons):
As in past years, both full and half shares will be available.

Full Shares:  $500/season – pick up every week.
Half Shares: $350/season – pick up every week.

Members must choose a produce share.
This season, we will not be offering the full share every other week option.

Optional Share Additions
Eggs: One dozen $70/season, Half dozen $35/season — pick up every week.
Extra Fruit: 6 pounds $100, 3 pounds $50 — pick up every week for 10 weeks during the season.
Chicken: Full Chicken $120/season (approx. 4lbs), Half Chicken $70/season (approx. 2lbs) — pick up every other week.

I just signed up for our second year. AMAZING fresh produce, delicious and lots of it, and Jorge is a joy. Can’t wait!

This is my 3rd farmere in nyc system, and Jorge’s produce is superior. I have been blogging about the Ditmas Park CSA with photos of the each week’s share distribution and more:

Can anyone comment on exactly how much produce you get every week? I’m sure it differs but approximately how many meals can I count on making using these vegetables? Thanks

    Hey Rob,
That number can change drastically depending during the growing season due to weather, pests, disease, and luck.

If you check out my blog link above, I list exactly what I got every week, full share, for much of the 2009 season.

Also note that 2009 was not a good season for most farmers but Jorge managed pretty well, should be encouraging.

Naomi, the photos on your blog are so helpful – thank you! I’m almost sure I’m going to sign up for the CSA this year. A few years ago I belonged to one in Park Slope. The produce was great, but the pick-up location was a bit too far away to be convenient.

I have already decided to sign up and have written my check. However, I can’t find the exact date that pickups begin. Which Tuesday do full-share pickups begin?
