Stabbing outside Salahi [UPDATED]

salahi 2010 stabbing

Police tell a neighbor that an altercation outside Salahi Deli on Cortelyou and Argyle led to a stabbing early in this morning.

There’s blood on the steps of the deli and police tape stretching all the way to Rugby Road and around that corner, where John’s Bakery is closed this morning.

It’s the second stabbing on that corner in recent years; a man was stabbed there in October, 2008.

UDPATE: There was also a shoot-out there in 2004. We’ll add more detail on this morning’s incident as we get it.

ALSO: We inadvertently disabled comments on this post this morning; they’re back on.

I think there is drug activity at all of these bodegas in NYC. The police should REALLY investigate instead of letting them exist business as usual.

  • Margo

That’s so terrible. Though I wonder if there have been shootings/stabbings anywhere else on Cortelyou? Salahi’s is unfortunately the only place I hear about…

  • carissa

From a cop on the scene: 3 men stabbed each other in some kind of revenge stabbing (this goes way back – most recently 2 weeks ago someone was stabbed). 1 dead, the two others are close to following suit.

It started in the bodega and went into the tot lot. 5am.

(I know, this is how rumors begin..>I am just sharing what I heard)

  • Dan B

It’s not obvious from the Daily News link, but word in the neighborhood after the 2004 shooting was that it was drug-related. A neighbor told me that dealers who worked out of Salahi were being robbed and went to their supplier for help. The supplier sent gunmen to confront the robbers, which led to the shootout.

All of which raises the possibility that this might be a persistently violent drug spot. Does anyone know if dealing had anything to do with these recent stabbings?

  • carissa

And BKforman: really? “all of these bodegas in NYC”?

  • James

I’m just wondering why they had to shutter a full 2 block radius? i.e., Why was John’s Bakery taped off by the police?

  • Michael

I would assume evidence search. They may not have found the weapons used in the altercation and suspect it was dropped or dumped.

  • ttintin

How could they have got into the tot lot at 5:30 AM? It never seems to be unlocked before 8 at earliest. I think it must have happened on the sidewalk in front of the tot lot which is why the block is shut down. Also heard from crossing guard one perp ran into John’s.

  • bkforman

“Carissa” No offense meant, I should say it with political correctness “corner stores”. However it is true. That is why you get people just hanging out side of these places all night. They are often drug places using the store as a front.

  • Rob

Well if you want to talk about suspicious bodegas, check out the one on Newkirk & 16th. ALWAYS people standing outside there, at 9AM or at 11PM. The bodega itself is creepy inside but there is definitely shady activity going on there and the apartments across the streer

  • av212

James – They taped off the whole block as a crime scene, probably because there were drops of blood all the way from the totalong the sidewalk from the tot lot to John’s bakery. The NYPD Crime Scene Unit was there when I passed this morning around 10:30. There was a lot of blood in the middle of Rugby Road between Salahi’s and the tot lot.
I am sad to hear all this bad stuff about Salahi’s. Frankly it is the cleanest and least creepy of all 24-hr establishments in the neighborhood.

  • bkforman

“Rob” – I totally agree with you!!!!! It’s actually on e.17 and newkirk.

  • James

I agree about Salahi. After they redid the entrance with new windows and such, it became bright and inviting. (Before I was honestly creeped out by that place) I hope this doesn’t become a ‘habit’ for this bodega. I like the guys that work there… including the old guy that just stares at you. And the food they sell has pretty OK prices and isn’t questionable like some of the ancient food found on the shelves at the other places in the ‘hood.

  • Sam

From what i gather all the incidents at/around Salahi have been people who know each other, nothing like random robbery or whatever. It’s not going to stop me from going there…

  • bklynartiste

That corner has always bugged me out. There are often people loitering and acting all suspicious, eyeballing you as you walk by.

  • Michael

In any case, it appears that the police are performing their duties in the investigation and sectioning off area that may present some hazard. Inconvenient but necessary at the moment.

As for Salihi’s, its location possibly permits loitering laws to be exercised to help prevent future incidents. This is mainly due to its proximity to nearby school grounds and not much else. I would hope the owner would want to discuss the matter with the 70th and have these incidents pushed further from the schools as the children shouldn’t be exposed to these incidents right near the school the attend every day.

  • Michael

From a cop on the scene:

“3 men stabbed each other in some kind of revenge stabbing (this goes way back – most recently 2 weeks ago someone was stabbed). 1 dead, the two others are close to following suit.”

Perhaps three public-service killings. Undoubtedly the mayor will speak at their funerals and thank them for their good work.

Gotta love those bodegas, corner stores, or whatever you want to call them. Another shopping mecca with an oddly limited inventory and a staff of loiterers is the place on the corner of Foster and Rugby.

  • http://mmcwatters.com/blog/ Michael McWatters

Let’s keep an eye out, neighbors. This kind of activity is dangerous to bystanders as well. We should be thankful it happened at 5 am, and not 7 or 8 am, but a drive-by could happen anytime, and the Tot Lot is directly across the street.

Vigilant neighbors reduce crime (note: not vigilante).

  • Dan B

Re creepy bodegas — I just want to say they’re not all creepy. The one on the north side of Marlborough and Cortelyou, across from the Coop, is nice. Also, the Tibetan place next to the train is my fave, if only they didn’t have the crazy meat-cutter guy from the old Associated in there in the mornings with his insane hair and incredibly long, gross fingernails. The Sherpa guys are all really great though, very nice and keep a nice shop. Lots of cheap basic Asian condiments/spices/etc and fresh baby bok choy and mustard greens too.

  • bepa

I am sad to hear what people are saying about Salahi’s. I have been going there for 6 years now, and the people who work there are always so friendly and respectful. I would hate everything to become corporate, like CVS or 7/11. This is Brooklyn, drama happens. Now, in the suburbs…people usually stub each other inside, away from the public eye

  • Melissa

I find it very suspicious that this type of activitly has happened at this specific bodega repeatedly. Undercover Law enforcment should really step up here.

  • Joey

QUOTE: “This is Brooklyn, drama happens. ”

I think three guys stabbing each other goes well beyond anything that could be labeled “drama.”

  • GoneFromDitmasPark

keep overpaying for the coops, condos and victorians…. you never know what will fly through your window or how you’ll become a bystand while walking down the block. ditmas park has been marginal for 30+ years. i don’t understand why people are surprised that things like this occur. this was happening almost on daily basis just 5-6 years ago.

  • Jaguar_Gorgonne

No slappz, keeping it classy as always.

  • Architerrorist

Marlborough and Cortelyou? Guess again. Drugs found dropped on Marlborough on more than one occasion, loitering persistent in the later evening. Clean during the day, though, I’ll give you that.

  • Jaguar_Gorgonne

So it takes a stabbing for people to realize the obvious? It’s a drug corner. Duh.

  • bkforman

You are right Jaguar. So is e.17 and Newkirk

  • GoneFromDitmasPark

i would say most of newkirk between coney and ocean. arrests within a 1 block of newkirk are a daily occurrence day or night.

  • Foster

What? Even the churches and mosques??? In some cultures, it is normal to spend time around a community center. In this neighborhood, those “commuity centers” are often the bodegas where people from the neighborhood, your friends, also regularly go.

    Paranoid much?
