Still No Trains

Tuesday, December 28th, 2010

The Q and B remain suspended according to the MTA. Those feeling adventurous can hike to McDonald for the F or Nostrand for the 2.

Express buses are “operating with delays especially in Southern Brooklyn,” according to the MTA.

The 2 and 5 at Church, Beverley, and Newkirk are running and are about equidistant from the F, depending on where you live in the ‘hood.

  • Heather

    Blurgh.

Does anyone have any idea when they may start up again? Me and the Mister are stuck in a serious holding pattern and REALLY want to come home…….

  • Nicole

Can someone who lives near the Newkirk avenue post office let me know if it open today?
I would like to send off some packages.
    Thanks

Here’s my question though–is ASP in effect tomorrow? because even if I go dig out my car, I can’t move it since the roads STILL haven’t been plowed….

If they send out ticketing elves before they send out snowplows, there will be blood.

  • MoBeta

    “ticketing elves” love it.

  • Karen

Spoke with MTA guys in front of Cortelyou Rd stop. They said definitely not tomorrow for the train. Love it.

I tried the Newkirk number for 2 days. It goes to some kind of computer/fax noise eventually. So, does anyone know if the macDonald P.O. is open? their phone rings and rings, then goes to a busy signal.

Just saw a plow fly by … with its plow up in the air.

The good news for anyone who’s able to walk over to the F (as I did this morning) is that it’s running at usual speed, with clear platforms and not more crowded than usual. I wonder why the B/Q is last to be cleared – maybe it has the longest stretch of exposed track?

  • Sharon

Liz – I’m pretty sure you’re right about that. As my mom said this morning, it’s not only exposed, but a lot of the Q is exposed and in the ground, which makes it even harder to clear.

Does anyone know if Sean Casey is renting out Sled Dog teams?

  • Lisa

I checked the Newkirk Avenue post office around 11 this morning and they are not open.

  • frank lee madir

I took the F this morning and it was fine. I want the Q back up and running, though, as it is much closer to my lair.

Since the Brighton line and the Sea Beach line (N train) are in trenches, they collect a lot of snow, and there’s nowhere to push it out of the way.

  • Rugby

I just heard a train whistle.

  • Kathleen

Rugby – Depending on where you are, you may have been hearing either the freight train that runs along the line between Ave H and Ave I, or possibly the F train (I’ve heard whistles over here on H and 10th from the F on particularly quiet afternoons). I’ve heard the freight train at least once today.

Does anyone know if any of the buses are running? The B68, B103 and the express BM1, 2, 3 could all be useful to Cortelyou but I can’t find information anywhere; any detectives out there with the scoop?

  • Train whistle

It can also be a diesel work train that can run on no electic power, that has a plow, and a work crew with shovels, de-ice gear, and it blows the whistle to warn the workers that it is coming, as they shovel the electric trains out.

  • MattTheCommenter

The MTA finally put some detail about buses onto mta.info. The headline: There’s no B68 service. According to that site: “Due to ongoing snow related conditions, there is no service on the following bus routes: B1, B2, B4, B6, B9, B11, B13, B31, B35, B36, B44, B49, B61, B64, B67, B68, B69, B70 and B74.”

Also, if anyone can explain the difference between these two statements (is there a B103?!?), I’ll be impressed.

Statement 1: “All other buses are running with delays and all limited buses are making local stops.”

Statement 2 — listed under B100 – B103: “There is no limited stop bus service in all boroughs.”

@Matt: they are terrible communicators. For two days, the site has read, “Also, due to ongoing snow related conditions, B train service is suspended in both directions from the Bedford Park Boulevard Station and the Brighton Beach Station.”

Bedford Park to Brighton Beach? That’s the entire line. Why not just write, “B train service is suspended in all directions.”

According to the B/Q official Twitter feed, the B/Q are back intermittently: http://twitter.com/#!/NYC_Q_trains

Has anyone thought of examining the texture of the snow crystals to see if its molecular structure has changed into a different type of “super snow”?
