Toxic Waste Dump of the Day

Wednesday, March 2nd, 2011

Several people have been asking recently about what might become of the former auto-body shop at the northwest edge of Newkirk Plaza, on the corner of Newkirk and Marlborough. So far we haven’t heard of any plans, but this morning a neighbor emailed over some photos of what’s there at the moment. Sitting in the far corner are several large liquid-filled bottles labeled “Nitric Acid” and “Ammonium Hydroxide” among other things, with glass sample slides and small vials scattered around.

He’s set up a SeeClickFix page for it. We’ve often seen full trash bags piled up along the side wall, but this is way beyond the “norm.” As with 583 Argyle, it seems like the city has no means to stop this, and that residents have no recompense but to make complaints that feel, ultimately, unanswered. When the construction on the Plaza is complete, it would be logical to protect that investment by keeping the place clean and safe, and this lot should be included in that. Having a business fill that space would obviously help, but it might take a lot of convincing to get anyone in there, if this is the way it appears.

Miss the station that was there since I was born! Gomez was a great mechanic and then the medical lab on Newkirk owned it until the re-construction of the plaza. Then it was a parking – staging area for the workers. It’s been empty for a while now and I hope it re-opens as a local station.

Speaking of the future of large abandoned structures in the neighborhood, what do you suppose will happen with Caledonian Hospital? Why does no one discuss that as a possible new school location? And when do you suppose they will take down all of the signs pointing to it as a still functioning hospital?

  • Rugby

Did anyone call 311? This seems very dangerous.

  • Anonymous Craig

Its refreshing to see other things available away from this Cortelyou Road centric neighborhood.

Couldn’t this site be transformed into something that would more significantly benefit the community than just another auto-body shop or station? Aren’t there plenty of those on CIA already? How about a pocket park that also serves as a beautiful entrance to the newly-remodeled Newkirk Plaza? I know that means tearing down a few cinder-block walls, but that’s no big deal. Wouldn’t that encourage people to go to the plaza and help the businesses there? Or, if that isn’t possible, at the very least couldn’t it be a restaurant with a great outdoor space on the corner for people to eat outside much of the year? In other places that I’ve lived, old industrial spaces were frequently transformed into pocket parks or community-building businesses like restaurants. Why not here?

I bet that the reason no one bought the property is because it used to be a gas station, and it has old huge gasoline tanks in the ground…they have to be removed at a great expensise. Therefore it cant be a park either without removal of the rusted old gas tanks…

  • ljk

All this was still there when I came home from work at 7pm. My husband (former Army officer) just went down there to report it to the cops on duty at the station. Nitric acid is a Class E Hazardous Material and should absolutely not be sitting out in public.

  • ljk

    NYPD is on it…

  • Andrew

Any updates? Who even owns this lot?

I say we purchase it and make a crowd-sourced vox-pop replacement!

    :D

  • lberghol

Does anyone know where this stuff is coming from? It seems like last week the lot was filled with a HUGE pile of unopened cardboard boxes that seemed to hold files and other random medical supplies. Odd and potentially dangerous stuff to be randomly popping up on a street corner….

  • slick

i’m pretty sure it’s coming from one of the medical clinics on Newkirk. there were medical files in some of those boxes, which is a definite no-no. medical files have to be shredded before being thrown away.

Walked by there this morning, cops had the area roped off and a detail in a car on the corner.

This place is a breeding ground for all kinds of vermin, stench and is a fire hazard. The solution is pretty simple. Why not have the Sanitation Polioe, NYPD, Fire Dep’t, and Health Dept, issue summonses to the property owner? Why not erect an indestructable vandal proof fence around the perimeter of this property?

  • DR

A fence around the property? Wouldn’t a fence be a magnet for grafitti, and also do nothing to improve the neighborhood? Surely, there is a better solution. Tearing down the building, tearing up the asphalt, and planting grass and trees would address all the problems that Mr. Rabinowitz is rightly concerned about. If there is nothing there but grass and empty space, there will be no vermin, no stench, no fire hazard, and no graffiti.

Why not call Congresswoman Clarke about the toxic waste in our neighborhood. on second thought – NOT!

  • RC Cola

    Looks like a meth lab.

  • Andrew

Ms. Clarke’s staff does a really shitty job responding to any sort of constructive criticism, in my experience.

Anyone up for a primary challenge?

I need an excuse to buy a pitchfork…

  • Karen

@Andrew, if you can get any party to mount a campaign against her, I’d be pretty surprised. I have nothing against her, but just as an exercise my husband and I checked out who was running against her in the last election. I can’t remember the guy’s name but he barely had a web site, and I doubt he ever set foot in the district. It wasn’t even a campaign. The Dem machine is strong in Brooklyn!

  • Yogibec8

If the area cannot be developed into a park, it would be great to have a gym there. We definitely need one in the neighborhood, and if it is right next to the train it could serve a wider community (easier access, fewer excuses not to go…)

  • jescajeda

I’d also hazard a guess that the proximity to the subway would make construction a red tape nightmare with the MTA.

Reply to DR — Fence is not a long term solution. It was just a temporary solution to a despicable dumpsite. Perhaps FDC can undertake to fast track a project for suggestions and implementation of positive reconstruction/redevelopment of this dumpsite. Ok DR- I like your idea of greening the dump. How about a community garden with a raised bed in which the plants would not be affected by the underground rusted old gas tanks? A neighbor tells me that they recall those tanks were removed prior to Granite Construction using it as their worksite to rehabilitate Newkirk Plaza.

  • Toxic Dump forever

Here is why you will never see anything done with this site:

  • DR

Mr. Rabinowitz’s idea about a (raised-bed) garden at the site is great. And if the tanks in the ground were indeed removed (as his neighbor tells him), that would obviously be huge in terms of improving the site significantly in some form in the future. Any way to confirm if the tanks have been removed? Did anyone else witness their removal? Does anyone else know about it?

  • To DR

Look at the video above here..it is very expensive to remove tanks..so it makes no sence for someone to remove them as a free gift to the next owner…we are stuck with this ugly site until either the city does something or a dangerous action happens…no private business will bear the expense to remove fuel tanks..he will look elsewhere…

The city has a program to address this issue, commonly known as “brownfields”:

To Andrew and all interested parties. As per the public records
    Owner Name: 601 MARLBOROUGH, LLC
    Property Address: 1502 NEWKIRK AVE.
    Borough, Block & Lot: BROOKLYN (3), 05236, 0001

  • Andrew

    Google doesn’t have shit on 601 Marlborough… Go figure…

So about that primary challenge? lol

  • Jack Rabinowitz

Reply to Andrew-Best I can figure out is that this requires some detective work to figure who owns the property and the actual location of 601 Marlborough Road. It appears the two addresses are interwined and the owner is mysteriously unknown. Hope someone can unravel the mystery.

This morning, a few men were taking measurements of the old auto-shop building on Newkirk and Marlborough. I asked the one in charge if he knew the owner’s plans for the building, and he said the owner, whoever that might be, is planning to put a discount store in the building. Of course, the owner has a right to put whatever he wants there, but if what I was told was true, do we need another discount store in the neighborhood? And wouldn’t it hurt the business of the other discount stores?
