Toy Store to Open on Cortelyou!

Thursday, May 6th, 2010

A branch of Park Slope’s wonderful Toy Space will open on Cortelyou, filling a gap left by the late, and much lamented Belle & Maxie, which stocked high quality toys and beautiful kids clothes before it closed, Brooklyn Hearth’s Jan Rosenberg, emailed.

The owner of Toy Space, which is on 7th Avenue between 14th and 15th, has signed plans to open a new Toy Space at 1410 Cortelyou Road between Marlborough and Rugby, and hopes to be open in early June, she says.

If you haven’t been there, it’s really a great store, tilted toward quality and engaging toys, but also packed with a wide range and interesting selection of stuff.

Great! I was in there a few months ago and said I wished they were closer to us in DP. The woman I spoke with (owner?) said she was looking in Ditmas. I’m glad it came to fruition.

Been waiting for somebody to pick up on this need. I think this store will do VERY WELL.
Looking forward to a new store on Cortelyou instead of a restaurant.

I shopped at Belle and Maxie regularly, but I guess it wasn’t enough. I wish this place luck, but with Belle and Maxie it felt like there was only a small core of regular shoppers.

This is great! I don’t have kids, but I love toy stores! :-) I like this place in Park Slope and that other one on Court Street (they’re still open right? haven’t been there in a long time). Yay!

Not to kick a dead horse, but Belle & Maxie was nice and all… but unless you earn $599,000 a year, their price points didn’t exactly lend themselves to repeat business.

  • Lucy

I think if they keep a really full inventory of a wide range of things at competitive prices, they will do fine. We are psyched not to have to drive to Carroll Gardens or the Slope to get a toy for a bday party!

expecting my first baby in august and so excited to hear this news! yay!

  • Inez

Hope the prices are affordable. Otherwise Target is just a few blocks away.

I hope that they don’t put Rich Frog on Church in Kensington out of Business. THey have great toys for affordable prices.

  • J

Where’s the Rich Frog? I’ve never been there.

  • juli

Rich Frog is on Church Ave, btw E2nd and E3rd

  • Anonymous Craig

I guess this means i can stop buying the crappy lead paint laden toys at the 99cent store.

  • carissa

    so excited!

  • James

Craig — it depends on who the toys are for!

  • Cat

my first impression is that a toy store will never work at this location…but who am I to judge.

  • J

Cat – why do you hate fun?

I lived at 379 Rugby from 1965-74. From the time we moved in, until about a year before we left, ‘Waldell’s Hobby Shop’ was on my corner on Cortelyou. Mr. and Mrs. Waldell were from Armenia, and lived on Rubgy south of Dorchester. The store stocked a wide assortment of plastic models and paints, kites, HO trains and all sorts of toys. They retired, and were replaced by Bill’s Discount Store right before we moved.

  • J

Wow, Tom, that gets me thinkin… I wonder (perhaps their reading this?) the Toy Space folks might want to ‘experiment’ with toys for older kids? Models and paints and such? A kite or two wouldn’t hurt either. Perhaps a cellophane dragon kite with a really long tail?

Hmmm, Toy Space folks? Whatya say… a little branching out in the new shop?

I would love to see a good yarn store open in the area as well. We have a lot of crafters in our growing community.

  • Dina

I second – a yarn shop would be fantastic!

HOw about an Arts & Craft store like Michael’s? and offer arts&crafts workshops for kids the neighborhood.

  • Nai

Thanks, for the history the Bills Location Tom D. Seems like model building is a dead art, Most hobby shops sell just hing end RC Cars and planes.

Rich Frog Toys on Church Ave. is wondrous. It carries merchandise for children up to at least eight years old.

It’s got books, stuffed animals, puppets, games, puzzles, collectible vehicles, party favors, jewelry, room decor, strollers, clothing, bicycles, tricycles, European wooden toys, baby toys, and educational toys), dolls, and furniture.

Toy Space is an awesome toy store. The owner obviously has a keen eye for high quality, affordable items that will both entertain and teach our kids. I’m really looking forward to NOT going anywhere else but own block to buy a birthday gift. B&M was a beautiful store but had limited options. This is the store our neighborhood has been waiting for and I for one can’t wait to shop there.

  • Yogibec8

a yarn/crafting store would be amazing! i would definitely be in there a lot!

  • Sarah

Something like a Michael’s would definitely rule.
