A Look Inside a National House

Thursday, May 19th, 2011

Today the Post takes a look inside the two-family Ditmas Park home of The National’s Aaron Dessner. He purchased it in 2003, and lives in one part and rents the other to bandmate Matt Berninger. The garage is now a music studio, where they recorded their most recent album.

In the event you’re thinking of redoing your own home (say, you buy 267 Argyle and want to do the work yourself), you may want to reconsider when you hear how Dessner fared:

It was so intense that Dessner’s lung collapsed from inhaling all the debris six months into the renovation, which included jack-hammering the pavement that covered the backyard to create, well, a yard. “I wasn’t being careful enough with what I was breathing,” he says, adding, “I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to do something like this again. It was so traumatic.”

Collapsed lung aside, the hard work paid off, since he uncovered original wood around the fireplace and lifted the ceilings three feet back to their original 12-foot height.
