New Trash Cans on Cortelyou

A stretch of Cortelyou Road just got some new trash cans after several years of being without. Neighbor Nicole Francis noticed these new cans along the street between East 17th and East 19th, where she says there used to be cans, but they disappeared a few years ago.
“I called 311 and DSNY a dozen times and they would not restore them,” she says. “DSNY told me that this two block stretch was residential (true) and that if they put out trash cans that they’d get filled up (well, duh).”
Despite her calls, these new cans were added by Sanitation District BK 14 as part of their own maintenance, during which they replaced a few damaged and missing cans in the area.
Trash cans are a hot topic around here, of course. Whether the cans are overflowing, or not there at all anymore, it seems hard to find a good solution to the problem. Some places certainly need them–as Nicole noted, one of the corners in the area that just got new cans is a corner where five bus lines make a stop (while it had lost a can at the same time as the rest, it actually got one back sooner than this week). But if Sanitation only makes pick-ups during the residential schedule, and no one is issuing tickets for people who deposit bags of household trash, then these cans get too full, too fast. And we all know what that looks like.
So while we still don’t know what the best solution is, remember that you can reach out to Community Board 14 if, in a situation like this, you have a hard time getting results from a city agency.
