This Week in Food Reviews

Wednesday, February 15th, 2012

Here’s what people have been saying about our local restaurant in the past week:

* Robert Sietsema gives more details about mutton balls in a full review of Kavkaz in the Village Voice. He also recommends their sturgeon kebab, saying it “absorbs smoke like all get-out and arrives thoughtfully strewn with raw onions and fresh dill.”

* David of Devour New York City sits down for an Alamo burger at Ox Cart and finds more than just a meal: “If you’ve ever wondered what the meaning of life is,” he writes, “this burger is it.”

* Bonnie at Fromga reminds us that Mamma Lucia’s on Foster Avenue is a place where you can “enjoy some good pasta at an unpretentious, old-fashioned northern Italian red-sauce joint that’s been around for a long long time.”

In Search of a Beefless Burger

Wednesday, January 11th, 2012

When a sign for Dollar Burger popped up on a Coney Island Avenue storefront this fall, several questions came to mind. Top of the list: How good would a $1 burger be, and if it’s halal, what would it be?

The compact restaurant, part of a small chain that includes spots in Manhattan and New Jersey known as Kashmir Grill, finally opened just before Christmas on CIA between Cortelyou and Dorchester. Turns out the burger is chicken, and it tastes pretty much like what you’d think a $1 burger would taste like.

So that begs a new question: Where can you find beef-alternative burgers in the area?

Cheap
Dollar Burger (816 Coney Island Ave) has exactly what they advertise. For $1, you get a chicken patty on a bun, with ketchup and mayo. Toppings–including lettuce and tomato, but also more interesting items like turkey bacon and jalapenos–will run you an additional 45 cents each. They won’t blow your mind, but they’re a dollar. The menu also includes more interesting Pakistani/Indian fare.

Comfort Food
Picket Fence (1310 Cortelyou Road) knows comfort food, and their turkey burger fits the bill. If you’re looking for a lighter alternative to a beef burger, this one is the way to go, and it’s a plus that you can get a side salad instead of fries, as well.

Most Choices
Ox Cart Tavern (1301 Newkirk Ave) has become the go-to burger joint in the neighborhood, and with that comes a good selection of specialty patties. Their veggie burger might be the best I’ve ever had, and their tuna burger was so popular as a special, they added it to the permanent menu.

Anyplace I missed? Please share other options, or any of your favorite burgers, in the comments.

Ox Cart Groupon

Sunday, August 21st, 2011

Following hot on the heels of some great deals at The Castello Plan and Kumo Sushi, Groupon has an offer for Ox Cart Tavern today:

Neighborhoods value their pubs as a place to socialize, just as they value the ends of their rainbows as a place to find extra parking-meter change. Enjoy camaraderie at close proximity with today’s Groupon: for $10, you get $20 worth of American fare and one dessert at Ox Cart Tavern in Brooklyn (up to a total $26 value).

If you haven’t tried an Ox Cart burger–not to mention their banana split–now’s your chance. If you have, try something else. A personal favorite is the pan roasted chicken.

Looks like you have until Monday night to snatch one up and the Groupon expires February 23, 2012.

Ox Cart Serves Hot Weather Menu Tonight

Saturday, July 23rd, 2011

Because of some mechanical issues in the kitchen, Ox Cart can’t use their hood vents, but they’ll still be open tonight. They’ll have a slimmed-down version of the menu, but they’re still serving food (and drinks)! Chef David sends over this update:

We are closed for lunch today (maybe tomorrow too) but will open tonight with all of our cold food options and we will be grilling hot dogs, burgers, ribs, shrimp caesar salad, fish burgers as well. I do apologize but we will do the best we can to do our regular menu.

I had the shrimp caesar, and a bite of the hamachi burger, last night–you can’t go wrong with either. Add a cold beer, an ice cream sundae, and air conditioning, and I don’t think you’ll miss whatever they can’t serve tonight.

Praise for Ox Cart

Monday, January 10th, 2011

More local papers are digging in and enjoying the Ox Cart Tavern. According to the Brooklyn Heights Courier:

You don’t get more American than hamburgers, and Pitula’s are thick and sumptuous, with lots of variations, including a vegetarian burger and one made with Ahi tuna that was so popular it was recently promoted from a special to a regular menu item.

Other new menu items get the spotlight as well:

Besides such hearty choices, there are also options for those watching their weight in the raw daylight that is the post-holiday season. That includes a grilled chicken breast on ciabatta ($10) and smoked salmon tea sandwiches ($7.50). Both are served with creamy dressings that can easily be eliminated for calorie counter, without losing too much flavor. So feel free to dig in.

I had some lunch off the new menu yesterday, and that chicken sandwich mentioned is actually a chicken ranch BLT–not exactly light, but definitely delicious. The new menu is a little more diverse though, for sure, and the rotating specials keep things interesting for repeat visitors.
