Yesterday’s e-waste recycling drive, hosted by the Flatbush Food Co-op and Sustainable Flatbush, was a big success. Christine Datz-Romero, co-founder and executive director of the Lower East Side Ecology Center, who ran the event, told us they filled about 16 pallets, and estimated they collected around seven or eight tons of electronics.… Read the rest

Let the memories of the neighborhood’s trash mountains serve as a reminder to live more responsibly. Garbage is now largely gone, but here is neighbor Martina’s list of 10 things you can do:

1. Bring your Christmas tree to get mulched in Prospect Park this weekend! Bring the tree over to the Park Circle (where Coney Island Avenue begins, Parkside & PPSW) this Saturday and Sunday between 10 am-2pm and get mulch in return.

2. Sign up for wind energy! There are two providers in our neighborhood, Con Ed Solutions and Green Mountain. I have been with both in past four years.

3. Sustainable Flatbush has great tips and reminders on how to reduce your energy bill, insolate your house/apartment etc. go to their website here.

4. Use reusable water bottles.

5. Do NOT use Aluminum foil/ cans (the production of such is extremely harmful to our rivers and lakes), but use reusable containers or cover bowl with a plate….

6. Conserve Water. My father in law like to tell the story when my eight year old reminded him to turn H2O of while brushing teeth, he has been doing it ever since….Saving 5!!!!gallons of water each brushing.

7. Use reusable bags

8. Walk… Read the rest

Sanitation pickups are expected to resume tomorrow:

The New York City Department of Sanitation announced today that it will resume limited garbage collection around the city on Monday, January 3rd.

Those who normally receive Monday collections should place all of their garbage bags, pails and containers out at curbside on Sunday night. The Department will not be collecting recyclables until further notice. Residents can also place out their discarded Christmas trees for pickup.

Commissioner John J. Doherty asks that residents clear a path for Sanitation crews to collect the garbage. If bags and pails are buried under the snow, they should be dug out so crews can have access to them.

What to do with the tree? You can put it out with regular garbage, or consider mulching it. You bring the tree free of all decorations over to the Prospect Park Circle (Parkside & PPSW) next weekend January 8 and 9, 2011 between 10am and 2pm, and bring home a bag of mulch for your garden or to make a winter bed for a new street tree. Parks Department will be providing some biodegradable bags if you wish to take some free mulch home, but you may as well … Read the rest
